Are you wanting a drop in barrel complete or a barrel blank?

Bill , Green Mountain has a tapered octagon barrel listed in stock in a 1-18 twist.

http://www.gmriflebarrel.com/bpcr-blackpowdercartridgeriflebarrels/classictaperedoctagon/winchester-octagon-barrels-profile-35-45-70

These barrels are listed as barrels for Black Powder Cartridge Rifle and are what a lot of the guys use to build up a long range bullet gun on a muzzle loader platform with.

Hope this helps .... Pete

Try Jim Carpenter 208-245-3693. Very good prices on custom barrels.

the oregon rifle barrel co. also will build one to your specs. for a decent price. they are on the internet. if your going to shoot pp they work best with out fuss if the grooves are no more than 4 thousands deep. i recently put a 1 inch round barrel on a renagade made by douglas. douglas cost a few pennys more but their barrels are the creme de le creme of barrels. it will shoot any thing from 400 grain pp to 620 grain pp with extreem accracy. my barrel is 35 and 1/2 inches long. you will love that cal. and twist. have fun. johnson1942

Is the Oregon barrel company building barrels out of 4140? Last I heard they were using 12L14, at least for roundball barrels. You really want to get one made out of real ordnance steel for shooting boolits.

John Taylor, I am curious about Jim Carpenter. I have never heard of him. What is the name of his business? What type of barrels does he make?

I just remembered that Al Storey of the Borchart Rifle Company in Silver City, NM has just started making barrels for centerfires. You might check with him too, I remember his introductory prices were pretty good.

norbade: your right about the steel oregon rifle barrel co. uses for roundballs. thet told me they do both kinds of steels but i would check that first. i dont know jim carpenter but i just aquired a .357 barrel to day im going to have rebored so im going to call him tomorrow to se if he does that. if he doesnt ill have to dig through all my files to try to come up with some one. one thing about oregon rifle barrel co. they stick to the specks you send them. when i said .50 top of lands and .508 bottom of grooves thats exactly what i got.

The above is generally what I shoot in it and my Whitworth. They're swaged 530gr HP's and then paper patched with 9lb 25% cotton airmail paper.

These are the majority of the 45 cal slugs I've tried in the 2 rifles. In either rifle, so far as I'm concerned the single best slug (least amount of work for the return) is the Lyman 475 gr 457121 P-H grease groove boolit. It drops from the cavity cast very soft at .454" and about 480 grs. It's paper patched 2nd from the left, and 'as cast' at far right end. Very accurate at 200 yards. I haven't tried it for group beyond that. Both rifles are basically muzzle loading 45-90's.
