Hi,
Using BP in a cartridge sounds really interesting to me. Is there a book out there that will help me to understand the BP cartridge and reloading for it? I have been shooting and reloading for 20+ years. I am really getting into handgun hunting and would be interested in BP for that application.......and maybe it will get me to looking into long guns for BP hunting. Drop tubes, compression percentages, etc. are all new to me.

Thanks,
Mike

I have one by Lyman called Black Powder Handbook & Loading Manual. It covers muzzle loaders to cartridge loads. There is also a lot of information on loading cartridges on the internet also. One of the best is by a guy (don't remember his handle) over at the CAS forum on how to load the 45 Colt. He covers most of the major things to know. I know I really enjoy shooting black powder in both my 45 Colt SAA, Rossi 92, Rio Grande 45-70 and both 20 & 12 ga shotguns.

Mike Venturino's books on the subject are quite good. For 45-70, Spence Wolf's book on Trapdoor ammo is great for learning how to make military ammo. SPG also has a book, though I haven't read it.

Your best resource is still right here, the Shiloh forum, and the BPCR forum. All places have very knowledgeable folks to help steer you in the right direction.

It's not real hard, just put enough bp into the case that the bullet base makes firm contact with the bullet. From there you can experiment with various amounts of compression, and wad material and thickness.

I have most all the books mentioned and I'll second the Mike Venturino books- plus they are well organized, well written and easy to understand. A good starter would be 'Shooting Buffalo Rifles of the Old West'.

Mike.44, You should read all the books you can but if you don't include the ones by Mike Venturino then you are not receiving all the needed information that is needed. The small reader put out by Steve Garbe (SPG LUBE) and Mike Venturino is a must read.
We also have a very good lube source right here on this forum.
Contact Bullshop and his wife Tina for the NASA lube. One of the best BP lubes made. You may want to also purchase the Bullplate lube for your casting moulds as their is not a better product made. Best To You David
I have no part nor do I receive any funds from Bullshop Lube. I'm a five year user of the products.

I do a good bit of BP cartridge loading from .30 to .43 caliber. I only have the Lyman Black Powder Handbook & Loading Manual but the posts above have a lot of info I want to look into.

My main tip concerns primers. In chronograph testing of loads in many calibers, I have found magnum primers give by far the best consistency in velocity. In fact, with my 7.62 Nagant, I have to use small rifle magnum primers for consistency.
