I went out today to try a new load in my BC. The load is Lee405HB and 70grs of RS Black powder. And the other was a 500gr Lee and 70gr of RS. The 45/70 loves black powder loads. At 100yds the holes were all with in a dime size. I install a 1892 Krag rear sight and at a 100yds the rear sight was set 150 and the gun shoots 3in high.

How many .45 diameter holes did you say you kept inside a dime (.705") size group?!

I really enjoy my BC with 457132 or 457125 boolits! Was the Lee 500 gr more accurate than the 405 gr HB in your rifle?

I'd like to see a little better detail on that sight installation.

The Lee 500 gr shot a little low than the 405gr HB. They both shoot to the point of aim. I will say the recoil of the 500gr was more than the 405gr HB.

The sight in the picture is a Model 1901 sight for the Krag rifle or carbine (they are different, and the carbine sights are $$$$.) Winchester mounted these on some of its single shot muskets; not clear if Winchester or Lyman made those sights, or if Winchester simply purchased them from the government. I have seen them in Lyman boxes FWIW. It has been a popular "substitute" sight for big bore single shots for a long time, but they are getting hrader to find. You can use an O'Hare micrometer, or the Ray-Vin repro of same to precisely set elevation; windage has to be set "by gosh and by golly" by pushing the sight with your fingers after you unlock the lever at the front of the base. The "points" in the windage scale are worth six MOA on a Krag rifle; you would have to compare the sight radius on the H&R to figure what they would be worth on that rifle.

Not sure, but I think you may have to D&T one hole to mount on an H&R ... I am guessing that you can use the existing rear hole, but the OP should be able to verify.

Looks like a fun rifle to shoot!

No I did not have to drill and tap any holes. I inlarged the rear hole on the sight by .010 and it line up with rear hole. I also had to get the screws out a scope base because they are longer. And yes it a rifle sight that I took off my 1901 Krag rifle that I have. The front sight is Lyman 584 to give a amount for elev that I need for 250 and over shots. And yes it is very fun to shoot. Those people shooting those high $$ Sharps look and what is it. And I smile a 350$ gun. What is different in the rifle and carbine sights?

show us your front sight, you have a good set up. i use 37 to 40 grains of reloader 7 behind a 500 grain paper patched bullet with a long bearing surface. it also is a consistant tackdriver. from all the posts their seems to be a lot of real pleased h and r bc owners out their. my barrel is throated to .459 so the bullet can be some what in the barrel when catridge is chambered. have fun, johnson1942

I took my H&R BC out to the range for the first time the day before yesterday. shot it at a hundred yards.35 gr. re-7 and a lyman 457643 400 gr. Got down to about 2 inch groups. I thought that was O.K.for the first time out. I know this little rifle will shoot better than I can. I shot 2 shots through the same hole a couple of times but the holes were still bigger than a dime. O.K. almost through the same hole.

You need to try some Lee 405HB they shoot very well in my BC. But with 1in20 twist barrel they shoot the 500grn and over better. My gun shoots the Lee Precision Mold DC 459-500-3R better than the lighter slugs. And I have tried Varget and IMR4895 powder with good groups but I get better groups with black powder.

I'm really considering getting one of these rifles but I cant find any information on pressure loads these will take. I'm not likely to hunt with it so it will be mostly used for plinking loads, but it is nice to be able to load a few hotter ones once in a while. I'm assuming these are rated for lever action level loads but not ruger #1 loads?

Yes when I load smokeless powder I load to trapdoor levels because I have loaded to lever action level but the rifle is light and the recoil is painful. But yes it well that lever action loads. My loads with a Lee405HB and 500 Lee was 45grns of Varget and it did very well.

I have run Ruger level loads in my BC with no issues including pop-opens etc. My personal favorite and very accurate load is 49 gr. Reloader7 with a Hornady 350 gr. J-word flat point. It's plenty for anything in North America guaranteed... I shoot this out to 350 yards with about an 8-10 inch 5 shot group using iron sights. I've shot sub MOA at 100. I've taken these up to 52 gr. Reloader7, but those really put me on my heels and aren't comfortable to shoot even with a slip on limbsaver. hehe Another good load is 47 gr. Reloader7 and a Hornady 300 gr. J-word HP. Very explosive though, so I use these for punching paper or steel only. I shot a deer and it devestated 3 ribs and vertebrae going in and came out bigger than my fist messing up 5 more ribs. Needless to say I lost a lotta backstraps, but it went nowhere, but there was a lotta bone through the meat too.
