The price seemed like a bargain, so I got this: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=74535684.

Now the big question: Did Savage ever nickle plate these? It's a done deal, and I have no second thoughts, but this board is loaded with people who have a lot of knowledge about these old-timers, so I hope someone knows.

At any rate I like everything but the nickle, so far.

I'm no expert, but I believe that some were made for general officers that were nickle.

That is not a 1917. That is the earlier model. 1907, I think. The 1917 was pretty much identical except for a grip frame that was noticeably larger at the bottom.

Hi,
Yes, Savage did offer all their pistols in nickel. Most were said to have been exported, especially to South and Central America. Sometimes nickel with pearl grips. Good book on the subject is called "10 Shots Quick" (I think)
Looking at the Gunbroker image, it would certainly appear original. Just look at the words FIRE by the safety.
Nicely made guns, as one would expect from Savage. Lots were sold to France in WWI.
Try it out, let us know how it shoots.

Yep, that book, "Ten Shots Quick", by Daniel K. Stern, 1967, Globe Printing Co., POB 5399, San Jose, CA (address probably out-of-date by now) is very thorough and well illustrated. You may be able to find a copy through AbeBooks. Portugal was a major buyer of the Savages.
