Not all that long ago in another thread someone brought up the idea of using a cast 158 grain semi wad cutter normally used in a .357 Mag as a plinking bullet in the .35 Whelen. Loads were mentioned and I meant to write it down, sounded like a fun idea. Well, I didn't write it down and now have the time to play with it but don't remember the loads.
Does anyone have a better memory than I do ?????
Thanks

I have no experience with the Whelen but I have a 158g gas check SWC that I have ALWAYS thought would be a great bullet for that. I don't know why it wouldn't work great with the standard 10.0g of Unique. MIght not be a good elk load but I bet it'd be a ton of fun slaying rocks and dirt clods!

not exactly plinking but....

51gr of IMR4895 with 170gr boolits is fun... :)

My favorite plinking/varmint load was always a Lyman #358009 over 46 grains of pulldown 4895. No kidding, I killed a bunch of prairie dogs with that load. For a lighter load, I have shot the same boolit over 28.0 grains of 2400. And even lighter, a 358495, 160 grain wadcutter over 7 grains of either Bullseye or Red Dot. That last one is a really pleasant, good-shooting load.

Suggest starting at 4 gr Bullseye and work up to probably 6 gr in 1/2 gr increments until velocity is in the 850 - 1000 fps range as best accuracy will be found in that range. Also suggest NS'd fire formed cases. No wad or filler will be needed. With such you will find a pleasant to shoot "plinking load" that will also be excellent for small game.

These all look good. The rifle actually belongs to #1 son and he is coming home for Christmas and we will try about all the suggested loads. Thanks to all !!!!
The 358495 with 7 gn. Bullseye or Red Dot and Larry Gibson's 4-6 grains Bullseye will be fun to try as he lives in south central Kansas on a few acres and has a few bunnys running around out back and this light of a load with the long barrel on the rifle just might be the ticket.
