Gentlemen,
I have come into a sealed 4 pound caddy of Green Dot powder. I am at a more or less "loss" as to how to best use it. I do not load shotgun at this time so shotgun loads are not my problem.

I do load/shoot a lot of cast boolit handgun cartridges. Green Dot data is lacking in this department. True, the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbooks, Vol 3 and Vol 4, show some loads but not many.

If any of you have had experience with Green Dot in handgun loading, I'd enjoy hearing from you so I can "pick your brain" and perhaps find some useful loads for this powder.

Thank you, each and every one,

Jerry

There are several threads about Green Dot on this site.

But here's a hint: GD is a little bit slower than Red Dot, so any recipe you find for Red can use Green interchangeably.

Shuz has the classic green dot load for a 44 magnum. 7.0 gr and a 429421 for 1000 fps. He was told by a powder rep that Green dot is a sleeper for 44 caliber.

Go Green, I don't know why but that stuff shoots great in my MP40.

Alliant has green dot data for 44 mag, 45 colt, and 45 acp. http://www.alliantpowder.com/reloaders/Powder.aspx?powderid=5 I also have data for 38 special and 357 magnum, but don't know its source and haven't used it. I was also 'gifted' more green dot than I can use.

I use nothing but Green Dot in all my Cowboy Action firearms. Clean, cheap, hard to double load and accurate....What's not to like.

I use 6.2g under a cast 250g in 45LC

Work great in my 41 Mag for midrange loads.

PB is the single base equivalent. Buy the cheapest one when found in quantity for this powder speed. It won't go to waste, that's 'fo sho'. ... felix

I recently stumbled upon a load in .45 colt that I really love. 6.8 gr. GD with a 250 gr. RNFP that is mild, accurate(!) and clean-burning. Just a smite hotter than rbertalotto, it is becoming a real favorite of mine!! I have been loading in .357 with a 158 gr. SC too.

I believe GD is one of the "best kept secrets" in handgunning!! If you like accurate and clean with pleasant recoil, GD is the one to try!!

I bought a box of used reloading equipment and components about 10 years ago and with it came 2 pounds of Green Dot. I used a bit of it for 38 spl. and 45 ACP back then, but mostly it just sat on the shelf. Last summer I wanted to load some light loads for a "new" 340 Savage in 30-30 I aquired and was out of Unique so I brought out the GD. I loaded 7.4 grains behind the Lee 150 fp, the Lee soup can, Lyman 311008 and 311041. THey all shot well under 2 inches at 50 yards.

I really like it in my 9mm Luger cast loads. Bits clean burning but can get a little smokey in rapid fire with no wind.

Rocky told me a few years ago it was a tad slower than Red Dot and it is. Have used it in my 45 colt rifle. Good clean burning powder and makes accurate loads. Almost interchangeable with the Red Dot; my rifle - my loads. Whats not to like except hardly any recipes out there anymore.

My S&W M-39 shoots 4.2 grains GD and lyman 358-242 122 grainers better than most jacketed bullets. I don't use it much anymore, but if'n I got some for free or cheepsies, I could surely burn it up.

Anybody have any ideas (or experience) about loading for 38 Super using Green Dot? I have the Lee .358-125-RF mold and I size those bullets to .356. These bullets weight about 128 grains when cast of ACWW.

I've looked in numerous sources for Green Dot data in 38 Super - Lyman 46th and 49th, Lyman Cast Manuals 3 and 4, Speer, Sierra, Alliant website - without any luck.

Green Dot has worked very well for me in 380 auto and 32-20 cast loads, so I would like to try it in 38 Super as well, unless Green Dot is just totally unsuited for 38 Super.

I like GD in reduce cast rifle loads and all my shot shell loads barring slugs and buckshot.

Here is a link to the 2004 edition of Alliant's manual - lots of Green Dot handgun loads.

Another vote for Green Dot in 45 Colt. 6.5 gr with 255 gr cast gives a little over 800 fps in a 5 1/2 inch New Vaquero. Clean and accurate.
