Someone near Hendersonville, NC needs to go buy this

http://cgi.ebay.com/Linotype-Lead-Furnace-Smelter-Large_W0QQitemZ250133780542QQihZ015QQcategoryZ7111 3QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

"" For auction is a lead furnace / smelter. This piece is probably 6 feet tall, natural gas with thermostat. My boss says it will melt at least 100 lbs. of lead at a time. Also have some molds and will even throw in 100 lb. of lead to get you started!

Due to size, this unit will be sold as is / where is

in Historic Downtown Hendersonville, North Carolina.

If not sold, it's going for scrap!""

I'm outside of Raleigh about 4-5 hours away. I don't have any place for it except outside.

Wow that is a serious furnace. I am just outside Raleigh myself but I would have to build another building to house that thing.

My parents live near there - perhaps I should look into it.

Worth looking into but how would you get ww in there, scrape off the clips, and skim off the dirt.

Don't know, but one of my cast shootin' Brothers and I may get the chance to find out. He's bid on it and we're only about 30 miles away. Since he already has a natural gas line run to his carport this could be interesting.:Fire:

I would say worst case is you get it for $10.00 and take the top off. You end up with a nice burner, 100 pounds of lead and whatever else he throws in. Sit it up outside and start meltin:-D

I like the natural gas part. If it would work inside a garage, it's a definite maybe. I have a furnace out there to keep the chill off so the gas line is a done deal. The fumes might be a deal breaker though.

It doesn't look that big but it weighs 300-500 lbs. More than l wanna wrestle with. And the thermostat wire needs to be spliced back together.

the moulds are not bullet moulds ( I called the guy) they are "pigs" moulds. basically what you make bar stock with. 25 pounders. I'll go by and look at it today. and give a full report.

IT's HUGE! about 6 ft tall 3-4 ft in dia, runs on natural gas, weights about 500 pounds.

I live in Etowah. (Not in mid-town tho, just the suburbs. Etowah is maybe five miles from H'ville and has a population of about 1,100 but we are gowing. Probably won't be long before the newer neighbors start complaining about the noise from my private 100yd range!)

When I first saw this post I 'bout lifted outta my chair but guess Blammer's report tells me it's not for me. Would love to have the metal but not the furnace!

Good luck Blammer! :drinks:

* When my ship comes in I'll probably be at the airport.

Sniping is part of eBay. If your max bid was higher than mine, you would have won the item. If you were willing to pay more, you should have bid more. Sorry you're pissed.

ahh, I'll get over it. :)

nothing against you! you played the game and won! good job!

that's why I don't like ebay, the sniping part.

I'm used to an old fashioned auction style bidding where the auction keeps going till only one is left standing with no timelimit. And yes I understand the "Modern" bidding process, there is another auction site I frequent, that when the timelimit is up, if a bid comes in at the last second it is automatically extended 5 min. And each bid after that extends it 5 min. no sniping.... then if no bid is entered after 5 min and the time is past for auction to end, it ends with a winner.

Tycer, How far will you have to drag it and where will you set it up? Post pics if you get a chance. I called local printers out of curiosity and found one who said he had the only furnace of that kind within 40 miles and that covers a lot of shops. It's wasn't for sale though and it's more than I'd wanna tackle anyhoo.

Yea that turns a lot of people off about EBAY. Its their rules so thats what ya gotta do.

Tycer when you get that thing let us know how you like it.

If it would have been closer to me I would have kept it a secret:mrgreen:

Some of us have to work away from computers and can't sit and wait for auctions to end. I used to do that and wound up in bidding wars just like in outcall auctions. More times than I'd like to try and count I've paid WAY more than I intended just because of the "action". (That's why I don't go to many "real" auctions.

For me "sniping" has actually saved me LOTS of money. More than 90% of the time items I'm watching go for a good bit more than I'm willing to pay. Even if my snipe executes in the last minute someone usually has in a higher bid and I lose by whatever the increment happens to be, be it 25¢, 50¢, or $1.00.

Hopefully the Monster Pot will be up and running soon. I have about 350 lb of lead laying in my driveway that needs to be turned into ingots. Maybe they'll be pigs instead.

A note of thanks!

Yancey and I bought a 1940s linotype smelter on eBay for $26. It's pretty good sized. It was a bit of a challenge getting it in the truck.

The thermocouple was broken, so I had to make a new set-up. I used PEX to plumb the natural gas to it and to make the pilot bypass.

Cleaned 3 buckets of WW yesterday and made #2, #10, and #25 Pigs.

Used it to make WW/Lino/Magnum Shot ingots today. Wish I had more molds. The three I used I borrowed from Yance.

I started with #500 of cleaned WW and added #50 of Linotype ( the smelter came with #200 of Lino) plus one pound of Magnum Shot.

Cool. How do you get inside to skim the clips and flux the lead?

I looked at this from an academic stand point (I live too far away to even consider it). Frankly, I am completely happy with my turkey fryer (fish cooker, etc) and my fabricated 60lb working capacity pot. I can easily do 120 lbs an hour and that is plenty enough for my needs. Mine is totally portable and uses bottled gas which, tho' expensive, is readily available. I'm not knocking anyone's set up, but that big smelter is more than I am interested in doing at my advanced age[smilie=1:
