It is probably superficial. Try a cotton swab and acetone first. Or 90% IPA or MEK.

Or a toothbrush and dawn dish detergent.

Drop the bead blaster and step away from the mold and nobody gets hurt.

Don't do anything that will round off corners and edges and ruin vent lines. You would be better off with the rust compared to that. Just try the tips already given and 1maxhunter will be a happy camper.

I had the same question that I posted here about a year ago. I used naval jelly cotton swabs, it worked great. It isnt too agressive that it takes off any metal but eats up the oxides. Naval jelly is phosphoric acid gel 35% I think, cleans them up real nice. Wash with HOT water afterwards and lube generously with a penetrating oil to drive out any moisture. Mine came out slick and functioned well, cleaned vent lines up nice as well.

Get a #2 hardwood pencil. Sharpen it and go over every inch with the graphite end. Then erase it all off with the eraser. Cut the point off and burnish the mold with the wooden stick, they used to be osage orange but who knows today. You have just taken the rust off and many if not all of any burrs that were left from manufacturing.

I have used the Naval Jelly with success. We do need to avoid the "3M green pads". Those things will scratch glass, therefore ruin a boolit mold. Try the "jelly" and a toothbrush and soap & water. You'll be good to go. enjoy Mike

The pencil lead can replace smoking a mold for lubrication issues also.

Surface Rust is easily removed with a little oil and some 0000 steel wool.

Comet, Soft scrub or Ajax and a tooth brush.
