I found this data fascinating. It's probably well known by the members of this site. Nevertheless ... :

Among other things it seems to indicate that with .38Sp, there are significant gains in muzzle energy up to 4" after which the benefits of extra length diminish. While for .357mag this happens at about 6". Also, a .357mag fired out of a 2" snubbie is about the same as a .38Sp out of a 4" barrel, while a .357mag out of a 3" barrel is out of range for a .38Sp at any handgun barrel length. At 16" the .38Sp nudges 450 ftlbs.

Am I reading this right?

That is a GREAT comparison!

It is hard to look at an judge some of it because of gun specs. I am not saying it isn’t good info. I am just saying that it would be a little more subjective if the data had come from “A”, singular, barrel that started life as an 18in “Long-Tom” and was cut down. Just talking out load, so take it for what it is worth…

No matter how you cut it, there is defiantly a big difference between an 18in and 2in barrel!! LOL I love looking at data like that and appreciate it!! The main thing for me is that I am just jealous that I didn’t have the time and arsenal to do it myself! Look at that 357 collection… … … …
