G34### 30-30 I have a chance to pick this up for a song $125... Looks nice needs a little tender care. i see someone drilled an extra 2 holes in the top receiver but they are pluged and the front strap has a galvinized screw in it. Barrel looks good (needs cleaning) By the looks of it it was made in 1949 That would give it ballard rifling right? I'm itchin to get this and shoot it. I'm glad i've been saving 30-30 brass.

randyrat,
Yes it is a 1949 and yes it will have ballard rifling. I have a Marlin model 336A with 24" barrel, half mag., it has S/N "G" with ballard rifling, shoots great. BTW $125 is a real steal, I mean a real steal, if it is in any kind of shape at all.:Fire:

According to "OldGuns.net FAQ" G is 1950

E=1948
F=1949
G=1950
H=1951
J=1952
K=1953
L=1954

I have a 336A rifle that is an E, a 336SC that is a G, and a 336RC that is an E.

I have a 36A that is a c. (1946)

As far as I know they started micro-groove in 1954, but I have a 39a that is an L that is ballard rifling. They probably used up parts until they were all.

There is 2 sources for the serial number/letters and they disagree a little as one letter was made for 1.5-2 years. Got to http://www.marlinowners.com/board/ as they have a lot of info on Marlins. I'd buy one for $125 without even thinking twice. Extra holes don't bother me as I shoot them. Mark
