What would you guys consider a good group size at 100 yards with a mosin, off the bench?Military surplus.

With Mil-surp ammo, I would expect 4 inch groups

Depends on the gun...My Finns shoot 1 inch groups, My Russians shoot 2 to 4 inch !
The trigger is better on the Finns and that helps. The Silvertip Czech ammo shoots the most consistent besides the sniper ammo and the Olympic Ammo (rare) I have.

A lot depends upon the ammo - my M38 with scout scope will do under 2 inches with yellow or silver tip ammo - the plain russian I have a lot of 3 inches or so at 100

Mine shoots 3-4 inches with 311299 boolits and 4895. I haven't tried any other powders yet to see if I can improve on that.

Mine has a true .308 bore...

We all know Mil-surp ammo vary's, so maybe my question will very some on what you shoot.
But these forms are about learning. If you can comment on what ammo you used also.

I've shot groups as small as two inches (one inch at 50 yards, actually) with milsurp ammunition from a bench with my 1943 91/30 with .300/.313 bore -- that's over the original military sights. I have no doubt I can do better with cast and a good choice of powder, even with the same sights.

With mil-surp I will get anywhere from 4-6" groups.

With my 1915-17 New England Westinghouse Mosin I can get 1"-1.25" with handloaded 165 gr softpoints.
With my 1940 91/30, 4" at best with the same ammunition.
Condition and ammo mean everything in a Mosin.

I just got back from the range yesterday. My 91/30 is now tricked out with a 3-7x variable and should do some serious hole punching, but it was not to be. The best I could do was about 3" AT FIFTY YARDS! The biggest problem seems to be the trigger, since I had to put both feet against the bench and pull like mad in order to get the rifle to discharge....not conducive to accurate shooting! It'll get a trigger job this morning then I'll try it again.

I'm sure these rifles are capable of decent accuracy, however when you consider the "emergency" surrounding their manufacture, it's not hard to understand how they can be a little rough.
