I was graciously donated 50 lbs of 100% plumbers lead recently, so I calculated up a good alloy (2% Sn, 5% Sb, and 93% Pb for ~ 13.7 BH) and got to assembling my first smelting attempt!

I acquired an old cast iron dutch oven, turkey frying propane stand, and my necessary ladles.

weighed out half of my metals and dumped them in

set the flame and began the melt!

Fluxed with some saw dust

realized i had double the casting capacity than I anticipated, so I doubled up!

I got the temp up to 700F, fluxed the new volume, and skimmed out the dross:

Where did you get that ladle?

I want one.

I upgraded my slotted spoon to spider ( a wire Asian thingy). Works a lot faster and cleaner on clips.

It's a #5 from rotometals

As for the propane stand, i'll have to get back to you.

I've much the same set up as you used including the #5 Rowell. I've found #5 to be a tad large for my smelting pot and need to go with a much smaller ladle with about 1/3 of the alloy still in the pot. I got #5 because I pour 5 pound ingots but it proved to be a bit too much of a good thing unless I get a much larger smelting pot. Mine holds 80-90 pounds melted so don't really need a larger one.

Great start you made, now pour some boolits.

Looks good. Did you have any issues with the aluminum muffin tins?

Thanks.

What was your melt time with that size pot?

Fun, isn't it?

Might use a bit more sawdust in a pot that big. Like 1/4 to 1/2 cup. (oops, there goes your wife's cup measures!)
