I have some 180 gr plain base bullets that I want to load in my 32 spl ,Would the load data I have for the 32/40 yield roughly the same velocity in the 32 spl. ? I plan on using Unique, 2400, RE 7 and 4198 for loads in the 1200 fps range. Anyone have any pet loads for plain base bullets in either that I could experiment with?

Thanks,Tim

it'd be pretty close.
32/40 is a blowed out tapered 30-30 family case too.

My 32 Win Spl likes Unique 8gr with a 180 PB and that's a skosh over 1200fps in the Lyman manual. They list the max at 10.5 grains , going 1485fps out of a 20 in barrel model 94.

30-30 data would be very close for a 32 spec.

I made a pretty good guess then! I loaded 10 each with 10 gr 2400, 8 gr Unique ,and last 10 with 6 gr of bullseye. These are commercial cast bullets from Bear Creek a fairly hard alloy with a moly coating ,I am first gonna try them as is if I get any leading I'll try lubing them.

I've had good luck with 4759 and 4227 in my 32-40s. There's every reason to believe they would work for the Special as well!

The 32 WS should run a tad slower, but the loads should still be safe. A 32 WS case full of water will overflow a 32=40 case, should you decide to pour the one into the other. All else being equal, pressure of a gas varies directly with temperature and inversely with the volumn.

Went out and tried these yesterday, The good is at these load levels there was zero leading with just the moly coating ! The Bullseye load shot great ,I plan on loading up a bunch more . The Unique load didnt do so well about a 4"-5" group at 50 yds, The load with 2400 needs some tweaking perhaps adding some dacron group was about 1" wide and 4 inch tall at 50 yd. I could tell something was a miss from the report a few just didnt sound the same as the rest. Have to say I was skeptical about them and the moly coating But they are just what I has looking for in a plinker for my old 1894 , Have to seat them a bit deeper than I'd like because they are not tapered but .323 all the way to the top drive band

vertical stringing is velocity variation it could be ignition related.
a filler will usually fix it.
remember to drop the load down before adding the filler.

You can run the noses into a .314 sizing die up to the first driving band and they should chamber with out seating them any deeper than the neck shoulder junction. I do this for my Win. Model 94 32 special using an 8mm GC RN design boolit.

Slow but will make a good winter project .

I'm shooting a 323-175 lee plain based (gas check step reamed out) over 4350 from the Lyman 48th edition getting 2100 fps 3.0 gr below starting loads. It was a 32 Remington in a model 14 pump. A very comfortable load to shoot. 32 Remington is really just an Ackley-like 32 Win special rimless. The 48 and 49th Lyman manuals have data for cast in the 32 Win.
