Where does one go to buy this tape to fix an undersize mold? Will it state on the package the thickness or do different brands run thicker or thinner?

I use copper foil designed for stained glass window work. 5 bucks or so will get you a roll that will last about 48 lifetimes. It is avaiable in various widths and thicknesses. It has an adhesive backing and has worked quite well for me. The stuff I am using is only 5/16 inch wide and cuts easily with scissors.

The "Beagling" ducting tape can be gotten at any ACE or other type of store. There are two sizes one comes with a backing tape the other sticks to it self.

Horace,

This is the 2" wide stuff used for HVAC work?

I found mine at Lowes. Like it was said, HVAC duct work tape. Its quite wide, about 2" but its what they had and it fixed the problem mold. You should also look at the Stickey about how to place the tape. It worked for me the first try.

Another tape that work real well is 3M Stovepipe tape. You can find it at Ace hardware. Rated for 700 degrees if I remember right.

I am a believer now , picked up the "usual undersized " lyman ...was really P.O.ed , went down to Ace hardware brought back the metal tape and applied per the sticky by Beagel ... now I have a functional mold.
Too bad I had to use it on a brand new one...., I mentioned a bit in the "sticky" also .

Same issue I'm having, bought a 311291 only to find out it cast under size. Sent it back with boolit samples to Lyman and about a week later a new mold came to me that also cast under size. So it looks like it's on me to fix it or enjoy under size boolits. Thanks for the info on where to get a lifetime supply of tape, maybe I'll send some to Lyman with a note.

Heck yeah, send them some beagling tape and give them hell about undersized molds these days....Then they will tell you what alloy you should be using too, BS!

Lyman says that all their molds are cut for #2 alloy but don't believe it. Even with #2 alloy it barley casts a .309" boolit. Maybe I'll just send them some .311" boolits after Beagling and let them figure out how that happened.

If they get enough hints ,maybe we will see the retailers offering a roll of tape with each Lyman mold ....or from Lyman them selves with application instructions included in their instruction pamphlets ......:veryconfu

Horace,

yes

The 600 degree 3M brand hi temp is 1 1/2 x 15 ft x .004'' with adhesive this has no backing tape.

The other tape is 1 7/8'' x .003'' w/paper backing tape no other specs. Were all gotten at ACE.

Lyman would then sell more tape than molds.

A couple of years ago a friend and I got together and melted all the WW he saved from the 60's and 70's. He worked in a service station and got all the WW for FREE. Melted all day long. This was my half of the deal.54680

I was finally able to get to the hardware store today and picked up a roll, so I'll put an application on my 311291 tonight. One more thing though, can the same application of tape be done to a 4 cavity Lyman mold? I have a 452374 that I would like to get a tad larger dia. from. I have to wonder also about my RCBS rifle molds .............maybe this won't be a lifetime supply after all.
