A friend of mine picked up this single shot rifle and we are trying to find out what we have.

Loads of pictures here:

And here is a chamber cast. Any idea what it is chambered for?

My best Guess are one of these ...
6.6 X 48R....Matches the numbers stamped
It is very close to a
6.5 X 48 Sauer...An obsolete BP cartridge that was eventually loaded with smokeless and J-Word bullets.

451Pete and I are trying to ID the rifle and the Proof mark is from 1950 on... E.German Suhl... Nitro Powder proof.
The Gun May be a Sauer and Sohn ( S&S) mark and it definitely is German.
ST.m.G is...
Stahl-mantel Geschoss (steel jacketed bullet). Other possible types are "K m G" for Kupfer-mantel Geschoss (copper jacket) and "Bl G" for Blei Geschoss (plain lead bullet).

The 8gr stamp is an 8 GRAM bullet. 8g = 123.46gr Bullet.

A little dark but readable if you make it 200% or more

Any idea on the value of this rifle?

I'm thinking about making my friend a fair offer.
