I'm looking for a replacement front sight for my 1895 Cowboy that is a little lower than the factory stock sight. Anyone got any recommendations? Thanks

I put on the lowest Lyman 17A globe sight they make on mine and it is perfect. With the Williams rear it will zero at 50 yards and is good to a little over 300, with black powder loads.

Decide to go with a Lyman #3 that is .330 tall. That should give me all the elevation adjustment I'll need for the type of hunting and shooting I'll be doing with this rifle.

A file works too.

Yes, but I like the bead on top of the sight. Plus, for the $16 it costs for the new sight it isn't worth ruining the orginal.

Rear peep and a post front is the ticket I've found. Bead covers up the target too much for me.

My 45/70 and 38/55 Cowboys came with tall Marbles gold bead front sights. If that's what you have now and just want a lower one, they're readily available.
I can't see the issue barrel sights well and use a tang sight/Redfield sourdough combo for improved accuracy.
But for close, quick use on a 45Colt Cowboy was comfortable using a fixed wide Vee rear, 3/16" bead front.

I've replaced the rear sight with a Marble Bullseye peep that works great, except with the tall Marble front sight I'm half way up the elevation ramp at 50yards. I'm pretty sure the Lyman #3 at .330 with the Bullseye will get me close to where I want to be. Then it is time to start working up a good hunting load for the setup. Thanks Guys!!!

I replaced the front sight on my with a Marbles I got from Midway that was just like the one that came with the rifle but shorter. I shoot it regularly in SASS long range matches at our club. For big bore lever action we start at 200 yards for first target, 300 for second, and 400 for the last target. I've won several matches with this rifle. I forgot to mention that I use a Marbles peep sight mounted on the tang.
Good Luck,
Tacofrank
