One hour after getting into my stand 38 turkeys came over the ridge. Waiting for the turkeys to get out of the way were two adult does and two yearlings. When the biggest doe quartered toward me at 40 yards I shot. This is the first time I've used a hollow point cast bullet and I may go back to solids. I was using an Ideal 308291 HP at 16 Bhn with 26.5 gr of H-335 in a 1925 Vintage Model 1894 rifle in 30 wcf, chrono'd at 1,900 fps. As is my usual practice I took the leg bone on my way through the chest and it looks as though I may have to throw away 1/2 of [ onside shoulder. Heart shot she went maybe 40 yards and stayed on top of the ridge saving my wife and I a worse uphill drag.

Congrats on the venison.

I too have shyed away from hollowpoints after seeing what can happen at them speeds. I'll take meplate or even a full wadcutter over a HP anyday of the week over a hollowpoint until the speeds are lowered below 1600fps or so and I seldom shoot my guns that slow....I find it boring unless one is aiming for true mousefart loads, but then the rules are totally different. I hate casting Hp's anyway so I guess all is well that ends well in this win/win situation.

Nice going on the deer. And also good to hear two more have seen the light about hollow points!

I still got an exit, you can see it to the left of that root stub in the photo. There was substantial heart and lung damage. I'll know more when we start cutting her up this morning. She was skun and hanging less than 3 hours after she hit the ground and it is 31 degrees out right now.
Thank you to which ever moderator fixed my photo. If I had as good a luck hunting as I do with those photo postings I'd be a vegetarian.

I like the looks of that rifle. I guess where you hunt and how you hunt can affect how and why a person uses what they use to hunt with. I've tried the hollow points and the 2-alloy soft points, and for a good many years now, use only a good flat meplat.
Good shootin sir.

Buck or doe, trophy or meat, there's nothing like killing 1 on opening day. Congrats.

Getting to be out with a fine old rifle and bring home some venison is just a great day.

Thanks guys, I've got this rifle and a matching eastern carbine se up with original Lyman tang sights. That setup works as well in the woods now as it did in the old days.

Nice doe. I wish I could use a real rifle like that where I hunt. I am stuck with shotgun or muzzleloader. When I shoot the muzzleloader, I use solid cast. It really knocks them down. Happy Hunting.
