This morning a bit after sun up here in middle MO I dropped my second deer of the season, the first a 9 pt with primitive archery, and now this 4x2 buck the 308 Win that was Dad's last build that he never got to shoot. I use a Lee 309-180-RN, with an aluminum gas check made from the side of an aluminum Bud Lite bottle. The powder was 35 grains of IMR4064. I shot it at about 50 yards and hit it low behind the front shoulder taking out the heart and both lungs. It ran about 25 yards and crashed in the little spring fed creek at the bottom of the hollow. I was back at the house drinking coffee by 7 A.M. With the wife's doe from last week this makes 3, and we are set for the year, though one more nice sized doe would be nice. I may save that for the old 62cal trade gun.

Best wishes,

Joe

Congratulations! It is a good feeling filling the freezer with the fruits of your labours. I am sure that that deer will be enjoyed through the winter months. I need to get out as the season is winding down and I only have a few pounds of deer left in the freezer from last season.

Good for you Joe!

My Work Schedule is such I may not even get out again before the end of the year so I'm trying to plan for next year's deer season already.

You need another deer just to have that cushion for the family. With prices of food now-a-days its probably best to throw another deer in the freezer to be safe.

Way to go Joe! As most people know game meat is so much healthier than store bought meat. Very minimal fat content and full of protein. With the price of groceries going up constantly it's nice to be able to go to the freezer and get a roast that would have cost $20+ at the store.
Great shot placement. To me that is what hunting is about.

Good work thus far! Hope you do manage to get that additional deer ........ food prices are either going to spike or there's another recession around the corner so it would be a good hedge on whatever is in the crystal ball!!

Best regards

That feeling of having plenty of venison in the freezer sure is a good one. Congrats.:bigsmyl2:

I'm pleased that things in the household are calm enough to allow hunting this beautiful November weekend Joe.

nice going Joe. Your dad would be very proud knowing you are using something he made. Also very good on getting that third family deer. It does sound like your meat supply is coming right along. I love deer chili on a cool day. My wife puts some chili powder, taco picanti sauce, chopped onions, and jalapeno to make a firey tasting chili. I have only put one deer in the freezer so far. I best get busy.

It is something to think of specially with those generational heirlooms. Heck, I can eat three deer myself in a year. Get that .62 stoked up. Good job.
