Hi everyone! I just bough a Marlin 1895 Guide Gun and I am going to start reloading for it. I plan on using a 405 grain boolit, but I'm not sure what lube to use. I've been casting and lubing my 45 Colt boolits with a mixture of 1 to 1 beeswax to vaseline with a little paraffin added to tack it up some. I was wondering if this mixture would work well in the 45-70, or if the velocity or pressure would be too high? I've never done any work with rifle so I have no idea haha.

Hay Cowboy,, It sounds fine,,, I use the same, execpt I use "Marvel" oil in it until it turns PINK, instead of vasoline.

It has been working great in all of my 45/70,, but I also use gas checks on all my lead boolits,, shooting up to 2100 + fps.. I'm not going any faster,, my sholder is toooo old.

Giveit a shot, never know until you try it.

Velocity, alloy, fit, and pressure will all determine what a lube will or won't do.

the vaseline will add plenty of tack.
the parrafin will add hardness, and some brittleness.

A tablespoon of Carnuba Flakes such as the ones sold by Randy Rat make a very nice lube that will keer your barrel shiny as the day it was made.
