I ran another test using Lee 312-100-2Rs in my new .308 Mossberg ATR.

I noticed something unusual. I left the cases flared and found very little sooting around the necks and shoulders. Ya' think that means I got a better seal and used most of the powder energy?

Look at the 2.4 group. Man, that's SWEET!

That is a fine combination of bullet/powder charge/lube/rifle on the 2.4!!!!!!!!

If I were you, I'd start taking folding money bets on that setup. WOW

Hey Jim, Is that some of those "Squirrel boolits" you sent me a while back?
My 300 blackout bolt rifle likes those. Over 6.0g of universal they are fairly comical to shoot. I was scared to fire a second shot, wondering if the thing actually went off it. Bunny Farts for sure.

Good work, that's a squirrel, stray cat, possum load if there ever was one!

Yes, leaving the case mouths flared seals better. Work up to 3.2 gr Bullseye with that bullet in your .308W. You might find a load in the 2.7 - 3.2 gr range that will work better at loger than 50 ft......I did.

Tbierley, please read the description of method in post number 1 of the thread linked.

Larry, When I started this project with the .308, my first step was to determine the bottom of the pressure window. I tried loads of Bullseye starting at 4 and went down to 1. My intent was to find the load at which the boolit would stick. 1 grain actually expelled the boolit, but the energy was very minimal. That being the case, I started at 1 grain and worked up to find the best group.

I'll be using this for a recreational load for Janet and I intend to try to kill a 'coon with it once, just for the fun of it. As the distance at which Janet and I shoot recreationally and the distance of the average 'coon shot is 50 to 60 feet, this was the reason I tested at that range. When I hit that 2.4 load, I put the rifle in the truck and went back to the house.

Jim many moons ago, I had a friend that hunted coons and used a 30/30. He had a load with black powder he liked, because it didn't tear the hide up hardly at all. He liked it way better than a 22.

That 2.4 gr load should work fine for your needs then. I shot several thousand of 90 gr SWCs over 2.5 gr through my target M1A on a 50 ft indoor range to perfect my off hand position shooting......worked for me. The 3.2 gr load at 800-900 fps worked better for hunting and longer range shooting out of my bolt guns. It is surprisingly accurate to 200 yards. But you don't need that so the 2.4 gr loads should prove excellent.....enyoy.
