Gentlemen,

Am finishing up a custom Peabody rifle in 50-2.1. Am done except for the forearm screws and escutcheons and sights.

Barrel is a heavy half octagon/half round barrel 30" in length. Am trying to decide what sights to put on it. I don't intend to use it for long range shooting so a vernier/Soule/tang site is out.

Am considering Providence Tool's Pattern 21 rear sight or the ladder type barrel sight.

Pattern 21 gives a longer sight radius and a peep but requires drilling and tapping the receiver's left side.

Barrel ladder sight is cleaner looking but shortens the sight radius and for older eyes is harder to shoot with than a peep. It does however give me sighting possibilities out several hundred more yards than the Pattern 21.

I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts, opinions and experiences as to which I should go with.

Thanks,

I ordered one of those ladder sights from Brownell's. It was back ordered nearly forever, but finally did come. Maybe they have a few in stock. It was a pretty good sight, after we tightened the screw on the sliding part.

The original Peabody rifles offered by Providence Tool, were only fitted with the barrel sights, and their catalog does not mention an option for a tang or peep sight of any kind.
Don't know if the still offer it or not, but at one time Buffalo Arms had the Ukrainian copy of the Fruend "more light" barrel sight, that might make a good option on your rifle.
