Besides fit and finish are post-'64 Win. 94s gosh-awful rifles that bring only mockery to the owner?

I shoot a lot of 30-30 and I've come across a well-worn Sears-Roebuck 94 with a birch stock and a funky forearm cap of sheet metal with a bit of black paint remaining (If rifles could talk.). But at $225, I'm tempted to start counting my pennies.

It's got a decent bore, but as one of the bargain versions of a post-'64 is it likely to be a disappointment as a shooter? It would have to be somewhat accurate to make up for its looks. (Lookswise, it's no match for my ol' 336.)

I bought one at a gunshow many years ago for $150. I replaced the forend with OEM Winchester parts from Numrich. I also purchased the 44-40 conversion kit that was offered back then. The cartridge guides and lifter were inferior/junk and I ultimately ordered OEM parts for 45 Colt. Everything fit perfectly and shoots great. So, there's a lot of possibilities.

i can assure you sears didn't make that gun...
anything pre safety and the stupid rebounding [don't wanna set off some primers] hammer are good guns.

blixen,

I bought one with a walnut stock (with a compass in the right side, no less) for $175 about six years ago, for a project.

I don't really know how it shoots, I put two rounds through it to check function when my nephew needed a "deer rifle".

I do know that he has killed a few deer with it every year, so it can't be very bad; or I would be hearing about how it doesn't shoot.

My post-64 (barely)is good for about 3" with any decent ammo using a Williams peep. I've shot quite a bit of cast boolits with it, probably more than any other rifle. I really enjoy shooting it.

My brother confiscated mine about 10 years ago, but he thinks it shoots okay....if I didn't have 13 other leverguns I'd be miffed. BROTHERS!

I had one and it had the stamped parts that were an embarrassment to Winchester. It shot OK and worked well. I really did not care for the looks and ended up trading it off but would not mind getting one again at the prices they go for. Winchesters are no brainers for shooting cast bullets and I keep thinking I would like to get another carbine for a bang around gun.
