And this is what it looks like.

I shot this from a 44 mag pistol at a range of 95 yards. Accuracy is excellent. I estimate the velocity at 1200 fps when hitting the deer. It went through the lower portion of the chest hit the front leg and broke it. The bullet lodged just under the skin and was recovered.

There is a long story behind this and it was the finishing shot not the first. The link is below for anyone who wants to read it.

I would like to get the opinions of you experts out there on how this bullet performed and how to make it better.

The bullet is swaged out of a 40 SW case. The case was annealed, a core inserted, swaged and sized. It was a hollow point.

The bullet has a dent on the rear, the ogive and the top.

I would like to get more expansion, but don't know how to go about it.

Would love to hear feedback on all aspects of this bullet and the performance.

another annealing and exposed lead at the tip.

i would cut the case shorter to expose more lead so it can expand a little more , not an expert , just my idea . i think the case reinforces the lead too much at the tip , ...bob

I found what BadBob and Run5Run said is true. I cut about a quarter of the case off so I expose about that much lead. I use a dead soft lead, such as eletrical conduit or roofing. Here are the results. The two on the left were shot through a 2X4 and recovered from a dirt birm the one on the right through a box filled with dirt that was about 1 foot cubed and recovered after hitting an old tree stump that was somewhat soft. Sorry, but right now I don't have any pics of the bullet before shooting.

Now thats what I am looking for! Thanks guys, I know what to do now.

I was worried about case separation, doesnt look like it will be an issue.

some flux on the core and the annealing will bond it to the jaxket...
i use 2 deep canellures also to help.
i haven't worried about separation too much, as you end up with a 70 gr piece and a mushed 170 gr piece flying through there.
the anneal/bond should stop that.

RFR- thanks for the info.

How are you annealing after it has been swaged, wouldnt it melt the lead?

In all my testing exposed lead tips held on to their jackets better then bullets without exposed lead tips.

Either way nice job with the sucessful hunt

to bond it you need to melt the lead.
think of it as soldering,or like when you do copper water pipe.
flux and melt the lead it'll bond.
you don't have to do the whole bullet for it to be effective.
when i do my 223 vermint bullets i core seat with a smear of flux in the case then out to a board i drilled holes to depth where the bend of the ogive starts and run the torch over them enough to re-anneal the jaxket, and just melt the lead. [about 4-5 seconds]
it made all the difference between opening and not opening.

once you figure out core hardness, annealing, and exposed lead.
there isn't a whole lot you can't make a swaged boolit do.
