A friend has a Mitchell Arms presentation cased Luger (I know it is not
really a collector item, but that is not the point).

Just curious about what company made it. It has "1940" over chamber and
"42" on toggle. It has Mitchell import marks (very small and out of the
way). Where would I look for manufacturer's code? It says P.08 on left
side, but those are the major external markings. Seems like I read years
ago that there were maker's codes like byf and such. Is '42' the mfg code?

Takedown, side plate, toggle have matching two digit number (same as
last two of SN)

I know these things are worth nothing even close to the crazy prices that
Mitchell was (is??) getting for them, but any ideas what a good refinished
Luger with matching numbers (at least I think that what he has is matching
numbers, correct me if I am wrong, please) worth. Bbl is very good with very
light pitting and there is some old light pitting under the refinish in a few
spots. I'm assuming that these are Russian capture guns, refinished by the
Russians and stored until now.

Educate me, please.

1940 is the date on the reciever and 42 on the toggle is code for Mauser. If the frame is marked P08 on the left than the frame is not matching to the rest since the frames weren't marked P08 until 1941. Sounds like it's a parts gun.

OK, thanks. I was thinking that the small parts matching would be the whole story. Apparently
not.
