I'm thinking I'm going to get in on that group buy for the 6 cav Lee mold. But had a few Q's first. I looked around and saw 3 different keith style molds for the 45. Though this one has a dif cast diam then the others (.454). How well does this shoot in say a 1911? I know I've heard people say they "work" but I'm thinking reliability.

This might be just the bullet I'm looking for as a good stopper bullet in the old 1911 and a nice bullet to start using when loading for my new to me Ruger BH 45LC. I also have a 625 in 45ACP that will like it as well I'm sure.

What is the overall consensus on this particular bullet in 45ACP and 45LC? What are some good loads for 45ACP and 45LC using this CB?

It would be THE BOOLIT in a M-625 or other roller chambered in 45 ACP/AR. It was designed for use in the M-1917 revolvers and commercial adaptations of that genre, which the 625 is another example of. It might or might not get along with the bottom-feeders. It should do good work in the 45 Colt as well, but I haven't tried that myself.

It is one of the few Keith designs with a short enough meplat to fit in the short cylindered, single action 45s (~1.600 COL; Colt SAA, FA97) when crimped to the crimp groove in standard length 45 Colt brass. If you have one of those guns, this is a desirable design.

If you have a longer cylindered single action (blackhawk and others) you might want to consider the longer nosed 454424 instead.

I can't help you regarding it's suitability in 1911's or S&W DA revolvers.

Thank you very much...I slugged the bore to my new to me BH today and found it to come out to .450 +/- .0005 To say the least I was happy with this.

I have several barrels for my 1911 and all slugged out to dif diameters. They say over in the group buy the 454423 will work in a 1911 but I have my doubts and they are served well because some guns like SWC and some don't and I'm sure its no different with this style bullet though I will work on one of the junker barrels to see just what feed angle it really likes to make it work if it dosnt work out the door.

Being a student I'm looking to get a mold that will serve more than one gun, I have a 625, 1911 and a Ruger BH (I didn't say I was a poor student :coffee: I just dont like to spend more money than I should)) Thanks again for your help..I'm gonna throw my hat in the ring for a mold.

Not sure if this is the one you're looking for from Charger, but here is a link to one article he wrote regarding the Lyman #452423.

Hope this works, if not...just copy and past it into your URL bar.

Wonderwolf,

The bullet was originally designed for the 45 Auto Rim cartridge and therefor designed for a revolver. The weight (235) grains was to duplicate the hardball load for the ACP round.

By happy coincidence it was found to work well in some selfloaders.

I had a two cavity. That bullet worked in my S&W 25-2, my S&W 28 conversion, my S&W 645, and all three of my brothers 1911's. I don't think I ever tried it in my Star Model P.

The next size up, 454424, was designed for the 45 Long Colt and Elmer was annoyed with Lyman for shortening it with asking/telling him.

Somewhere, I have a link to some articles by Glenn Fryxell describing the various Keith designs. Something like "Variations on a near perfect theme" I can't locate it right now, when I do I will post it.

If Lee cuts the bullet as they have been asked to, it will be a winner.

Good Luck

It t'was Chargers article that made me do it! I have at least 2 different examples of 452423 and the older 6 banger GB. GOOD BOOLIT!!! For the 1911 if you can find someone willing to part with their 45BD you'll have a fine design with a max metplat for the bottom feeders.

Wonderwolf,

The next sixe up, 454244, was designed for the 45 Long Colt and Elmer was annoyed with Lyman for shortening it with asking/telling him.

ummm did I miss something? My Lyman book has. 452424, 454424 but no 454244?.....

On another note do the boolits from the above and the 454423 mold weight the same? I can't find load data for 45ACP or 45AR but I think I have plenty of loads to use for 45LC

The bore on my BH is .450 which is kind of strange if you ask me but will work wonderfully as it makes my life easier by far :Fire:

Wonderwolf,

You are correct, my fingers often type in a different order than what I think. I have editted the original post to correct the mold number.

The weights will be similar as the diameter is only changing a couple of thousandths of an inch. Weight will also be dependant on alloy. EK cast much of his bullets with binary alloys of lead and tin so it will be differant if done with wheel weights, or linotype or pure lead.

454423 weighs around 235 grains.

454424 weighs around 255 grains.
