Mismatched sight?

I have an 1973 model in really fine condition, but it has an 1884 type Buffington rear sight. Does anyone know whether or not this could be correct, that is, were the 1873s ever updated with this sight by the Army? If so, I'd keep it as it is; otherwise, I'll want to find an old ladder-type sight to make it correct.

There are any number of reasons it is correct. So don't change it out.

Get one or two of the very good books on the Springfield and read about it.
Great, neat, under value old rifles! SO, Don't remove that Buffington as is it very likely correct. Just my $ .02 worth.
