just got finished processing my doe. 3 hours. soon as you pull the trigger the funs over!!
i shot her my grandfathers 97 yr old mod 94. used lyman 173 gr FP GC WW over 20.0 gr IMR 4198. at a measured 70 yds. on a quartering away shot. it went thru behind the shoulder and out the center of the chest thru the breast bone. no expansion at all on exit. same size hole in and out. blew up the heart. deer dropped like it was poleaxed. i'm not complaining, just wondering if my temp. is too high or ??

If you are cutting up venison I would say it all worked as planned

2nd that & if no hard or tuff object was hit the boolit won`t expand .

HPs are a different story , enuff speed & it`ll open hydraulically in soft tissue.

I've sometimes found boolit shanks, which would have left an exit hole the same size as the entrance hole. But, what happens between point A and point B might be different story. Could be you got good expansion through the heart, where it was needed the most.

Yes, hard to say without knowing your alloy or bhn.

I would not worry about it. The animal dropped. I have seen a deer hit by a .38-55 where the bullet was a pass through but the bullet recovered. No expansion but the bullet pulled a quart jar full of lungs after it through the exit hole. In this case it was a flat nosed cast bullet.

I had similar experience with a .303 jacked round nose on a coyote. Did not recover the bullet in this case but the exit hole did not look like the bullet expanded but there was a big cup full of lung hanging out the exit hole.

Personally, I would keep using the bullet that gave the accuracy. If it is hittlng at something like 1500 or so for a .30 or 900 + for a larger slug, you have meat on the table.

ok then. sounds good. i am using WW, with tin from sodier (sp). air cooled. my son, using his rifle w/my loads, hit a buck at around 90 yds in the shoulder, broadside. it did the "i'm hit" hop and ran in a 20 yd circle and collapsed. exit was behind the ribs in the off side, small hole like a keyhole, blood everywhere. shoots 2" groups consistantly off the bench. think i'll keep using it.

well that's the good thing about using cast boolits they penetrate deep and straight.
the exit is what makes things good.
i don't care what anybody say's about "well you recovered the animal" junk.
i want two holes.
if you want a little more expansion make the alloy a little softer,or just soften the nose some.
same as the jaxketed factory guy's do.

i am now casting the two step soft nose bullet. i agree w/the two hole opinion 100%. i just want a larger exit than entry hole. that works best in my limited experience.

I was amazed at how little expansion these lead bullets have too. I shot a little guy at 42 yards with a 565 grain pp bullet in pure lead. Had complete pass thru with no expansion, but the deer still went down in short order.

I get good expansion with 30:1. I compared two I shot with 32-40 @ 1800 to two shot with 30-30 170 gr federal. Shot placement very similar. My exit wounds were 50% larger. One bang flop, one went 20 yards leaving quite the trail of blood and lungs. Works good. No noticeable leading, if any.
