A friend of mine gave me this for Christmas. He said it didn't fit his gun collection and he would never shoot it, and it didn't mean anything to him. He said he knew I thought it was cool.

I am not exactly sure what I have here. I think it is a Swede.

It has a Weaver sidemount, with a Weaver 1.5-4.5 scope. The scope is a little cloudy, but I think I can get it refurbished.

My first milsurp! Now I need to find a mold, some brass, and some dies. Any recommendations? I signed up for the MiHec 3 cavity brass solid - 6.5mm Cruise Missle. Is that a good choice?

Looks like a 94 Carbine thats been sporterized, probably done up in the 1960's.
A good deer rifle as is, and possibly restorable if the DT holes can be plugged and stock and fittings found for it.

I don't know for sure but it looks like the original sights are present.

yes that is what it is a 94 carbine. now we say it is a bubba gun. but back then when you paid $20 for it. it was a cheap deer rifle hog gun. it is worth restoring i would keep a lookout for a stock and barrel band.

It could be a cut down M96 Swede too guys with the bolt forged -- got any close up pictures of the bolt itself so we can see if it's been forged or if it's the original short rifle.

I think the Swede short rifle with the bolt already bent is the model 38????

I'm also assuming it's 6.5x55 cal?

I like the lines and looks of it. The Weaver looks period correct for that era of sporterized guns.

Looks to me to be a bubba'd Swiss Carbine. A shame if it is, because they are becoming quite rare today.

Correction, make that a Swede carbine. It's early and I am only about one cup of coffee awake yet.

It's a 94 carbine, judging from the rear sight. But the bolt handle looks wonky in the pic, like it was altered to miss the scope. Too bad, 94 carbines are one of the few I wouldn't consider altering.

Nice little rig. Would sure be handy and there ain't nothing wrong with the 6.5X55.

it is a carbine the rear sight and the muzzle cap are carbine only. also the fill in buttstock where the sling buckle went on the right side. the 94 cargine had truned down bolts.

I keep and use the carbine as is. Too much required for a proper restoration, and restored it still would not be a prime example.
As is it looks to be a very handy piece, one that would be difficult to match for its purpose. Its also an example of what shooters wanted in those days, and why so many milsurp rifles ened up altered.

PS
If the barrel is in very good condition, and you did not want this caliber, someone in need of an original barrel to complete a restoration might pay well for the barrel with its sights, or perhaps wish to buy the rear sight alone.
If you sold any parts you could invest in further custom parts like a sporter type rear sight or a rebarreling job to a more common modern commercial chambering suited to the action.

The barrel looks in great condition, just by pulling the bolt and looking down the barrel. I am going to start cleaning it up this weekend.

I thought about sending the scope in to get refurbished, but when I screw it up to 4.5 power, it hits on the safety and I can't get the proper eye relief. Overall when I saw the Weaver mount and scope, I thought it was pretty cool. I can only get a good cheek weld and proper eye relief at 1.5 power if I use the scope. (and still have a functional safety)

Is the 6.5 cruise missile a good boolit for this gun? Any idea on the value of the rig?

6.5 Swede Mauser 96; wasn't this called the "Engineer's carbine" in some countries?

The Arg was called an Engineers Carbine. Don't remember the Swede ever called that but I have been wrong before.

Since it is already sporterized you could go the rest of the way and have it drilled and tapped for scope bases on the receiver. This would require the bolt handle be bent some more and a replacement safety.
There is no problem finding 6.5 X 55 brass or loaded ammo so if the barrel is good no reason to change it.
From what I have heard on the Cruise Missile the way it is cut now it is too long to stabilize so members have had the top of the mold block milled down. Also some have dropped boolits way too large. I would look for a different mold.

I had an old ratty Swede 38 years ago and I sporterized it and it was a handy, light, and accurate rifle. I sold it to a friend of mine. Might have to look him up!
