View Full Version : WW Collecting-Sometimes Like Dating

I am happy to have my car service needs taken care of by an honest, competent, reasonably priced shop. Their estimates are etched in stone, rather than wildly varying. Also, they have been a major tire dealer since 1921 or so. In the three years I have dealt with them, the galena fairy has blessed me with 2 1/2 buckets of WW. Not fabulous, but enough to keep the wolf away from the door. Their manager has hinted darkly at EPA forbidding giving or selling WW to other than "licensed recyclers."

Here comes the dating analogy. My ancient experience with date requests was that sometimes the answer was "yes", and sometimes a polite "thanks, but no thanks." I heard stories about slaps in the face and insults, but never experienced any of those." Today I got the slap in the face and insult from the tire shop.

This afternoon, my favorite mechanic, Eric, phoned to tell me that my wife's car was ready, and that the bill was $758.01 as estimated. Eric told me that the car was all systems go. (My truck was in there last month to the tune of $400+.) I expressed my pleasure over Eric's good work and asked if he could fix me up with some WW. He said, "I think we can work that out." Apparently Eric asked the manager's permission. When we went to pick up the car, the manager collected our money, then said, "I understand you need some sinker material." The manager then escorted me to the tire machine, looked around, and said that he had only one bucket, which looked to be almost half full. I thanked him, took the bucket, estimated 50 lbs, to my truck, and returned with my exchange bucket. I then fumbled toward my pocket, not the one with $25 for a large pizza in it, but the manager waved it off.

This was the easiest bucket of WW I ever sorted. It weighed exactly 50 lbs. There was seven lbs. of WW thinly scattered on top of 41 lbs. of trash, mostly lug nuts and huge bolts. A polite "no" would have been better than seven lbs. of WW and being used as a garbage man.

Will I ever have my cars serviced there again? You bet! A place that does good work is very hard to find, and I'm not about to cut off my nose to spite my face. Will I ever buy another tire there? Not bloody likely! It's getting brutal out there.

NVcurmudgeon: Congrats on your "galena" excursion! I haven't dated in almost forty odd years so....I'll take the prospect on faith. If the EPA is clamping down on who has access to WW's, that could be a reason for sky high costs in the near future. I guess I'll have to rake the backstop sooner than I thought to mix with the lino I have been hording. Have a great week!

So now we are going to see you walking the turnpike ramps pulling a wagon with an old Americal flag waving on the back of it as you hit the happy trail.

Tomorrow's NEWS:

A man was apprehended today at the mall using a screw driver to remove lead from vehicle tires. This spirited citizen was removing hazardous lead that could be dangerous to our children or pets. While illegal and problematic for the owners, we salute this civic minded citizen and wish him well in his defence. When we return from the break, "Cats, and Global Warming". Stay with us, you won't want to miss this.

NO! NO! A screwdriver is a poor choice of tool for removing weights, The bottle opener blade of a Swiss Army knife is much more efficient.

Yep! Did you ever hear of anybody who was anti-fishing? Truth be told, my fishing is almost entirely for trout, in rivers and creeks, and with flies. Don't have a lot of use for sinkers, but it is a more believable story than lead soldiers at my age.

One can only IMAGINE the hue and cry from the trendy leftist soccer dads and Tupperware moms if LEAD SOLDIERS were played with by their little darlings. About like strychnine cookies and milk, from the reaction received.

I prefer WW's for making fishing lures than to use pure lead. WW's are harder, and when my jigs and such hit rocks on the bottom, the lures deform less. The problem with pure lead is it dents easily. The paint doesn't want to conform to the dent being less pliable, and consequently, my nice paint jobs chip off quickly on pure lead fishing tackle then my paint jobs look like crap. I make tons of jig heads, generic Erie Dearies, spinner baits, etc from WW's. My brother takes alot of them to Canada for discounts from the lodge where he stays. It's nothing for me to turn out 5000 jig heads in a year. Unfortunately, the one truck shop I frequented every week in Columbus has been also discovered by someone else interested in wheel weights. When ever I stop by, either they have none or the other 'new' collector will take the WW's and leave the soft lead stick on strips. I'm a BP shooter also, so I'm happy to have the pure lead for round ball. So my regular source for WW's has been pretty much wiped out, and I'm down to collecting about a hand full of lead weights per week. That is the way it goes I guess, but a handfull a week will add up to a significant amount of lead in a years time. Although I don't have as much as everyone else, I still feel really blessed that I have what little I do have, and can be thankful and enjoy these blessings that I have been given.

If it was me, I'd smelt out the lead, then take back the remainder of the bucket of bolts, and lead clips, and just leave the bucket beside, not in front of, their front door. And if anything was ever to be said, well, your comment about being "THEIR" junkman would be exactly what I'd tell them.
Just my $0.02................................Lee:wink:

Why?? Because when it happens to me, I resent being treated as stupid as I might look. "I didn't get this old by being dumb".............Lee:wink:
