I've loaded a lot of cast bullets for rifles, but not pistols. I'm looking for load data for 9mm Luger 100 grain hard cast loads. I have W231, but don't know if that is too fast a powder for hard cast bullets. If so, what is a good pistol powder for cast bullets?

First i would use cast bullets sized to at least .357 dia or possibley larger , use only the same brand of brass for each different load combo , 231 will work as long as it meets your accuracy goals .
I have found that cast bullets sized @.357 shoot best in my pistols even though most slug @.355 dia , i have 3 ,9MMs and 2, 38 supers. 3 with match barrels . also 125 gr and heaver cast bullets with a TC / SWC nose profile are more accurate than most RN designes
For me atleast the faster powders will work fine but i have gotten my best absulate accuracy with cast with med fast to med burning speed powders , such as Powerpistol, WSF, WAP, & HS6 and this is true in every one of the above pistols.

I size all my 9MM bullets to .357 dia. I cast and loaded a few hundred Lee 356-102-1r with 3.2 grains W231 in 9MM for fun, they were O.K. but went back to the heavier (120-125g)Lee TL and conventional lube groove truncated cone bullets and also the Miha 147g BB with W231 powder. It gives reasonable accuracy(for me) for USPSA games. I have tried several other powders but keep coming back to W231. For me it meters good, the price was several dollars cheaper than other local powders and it's always on the shelf here.

If 3.2 grains W231 is your pet load, what is a good start load for this bullet/powder combination?

I honestly don't remember why I picked 3.2 grains. I cast and loaded a few hundred, shot an informal steel plate match with some friends and haven't cast anymore. The recoil impulse seems sharper with the lighter bullets to me so I went back to the heavier bullets. I have been tempted to try some more but just haven't.

The ranch dog 100 gr shoots good in my 1st round of tests from a sig 226 in 9mm. I shoot 4 grains of 231 with the 124 gr lee rn but 4 grains with the rd 100 grain bullets did not have enough juice to fully cycle the action. 4 grains of bullseye did pretty good and 5 grains of unique did even better. I will up the charge of 231 this week and try again, but it will have to be good to beat the unique load.

One of my fav's with the 9mm is 4.1 of SR7625 (same as Unique) only it meters WAY nicer. Been using a lot of Red Dot in the 9 lately also. 3.9 grs, I think. Both work real well with boolits in the 125 gr range. enjoy Mike

I tried 125 RN cast with that charge and the gun wouldn't cycle. I'm surprised it worked with an even lighter bullet. But there's a lot I don't understand.
