View Full Version : Flat bottomed containers for boolit storage?

What's a good source of flat bottomed containers to store lubed boolets in? I bought some of those disposable food storage containers, but they have raised ridges in the bottoms for strength that cause the boolets to tip over. Other than cookie sheets, which are expensive and too shallow, what are some good storage containers for lubed bullets other than just tossing them in a tub and hoping the lube stays in the grooves?

Used cartridge blocks from ammo boxes, If you have the box as well as the block, you have a complete package. If you don't have the sleeve, put the block in a small plastic bag which will keep the lube fresh.

I use small cardboard boxes, bought in bulk they are like 30c each, but all the plastic bins need is a piece of cardboard cut to fit the bottom.

That looks like the box I use. I have twelve of them. I cut masonite dividers for various levels. They stack great and are the cat's A$% for long term storage. I just size/lubed some 150 grain .38's. I can store over 1100 bullets in one of those boxes.

I get mine at an office supply store.

Dollar Store purchase.

Last time I was in one, that had about five different kinds/sizes.

I use cigar boxes. Although I quit smoking about 4 yrs ago after my heart attack & bypass surgery, two local cigar store/tobacco shops still give me their empty boxes. With a cardboard divider they can hold over a thousand pistol/revolver or rifle bullets each. I use mainly 50/50 NRA formula lube and as long as you don't let the bullets get hot, the lube stays in the grooves just fine. Best of all, they're free.

I have about 35 30cal ammo cans I use to store cast bullets and loaded ammo in and they stack real well in the corner of my loading room out of the way I use a black marker on the front and top so I know what inside of them in a quick look D Crockett

OK, I really hate referring anyone to FleaBay, but I just ordered some boxes that I think will be perfect for storing my lubed/sized cast boolits. They will stack neatly insuide. I found that I could buy and ship 30 boxes for about $32, so a little over $1.00 ea.

I like the chinese food containers. I put in a piece of 1/32" paper (picture matting) on the bottom and between layers. Most of them hold at least 300-400 boolits, depending on caliber. Free. enjoy Mike

Used check book boxes work pretty good too. Cardboard or something like it between layers.

I made my own with some scrap strips of trim lumber and luan veneer. They are deep enough to allow stacking and sized by depth for rifle or pistol. Sorry no pics available. (but it did happen!)

Sure would like to see a pix.

How about a more detailed description.

How wide vs how long?

They're provided for free FOR SHIPPING. No matter how you rationalize it, it is theft to take them for uses other than that for which they were provided.

Agree 100% with Alchemist. I re-use all the boxes I receive from stuff I buy though.

I just got some of the midway boxes. They lay flat until you "pop" them open, they fold out for use.

If you have a big Lots in your area they sell a creamcheese storage container. It is a true rectangle, no rounded corners, and it will hold just over 100 240 grn 44 cal bullets. They sell for a buck a piece and are made out of a desent thickness of plastic.

I have alot of empty trays that CCi Blazer 45acp is packaged in. Also Wolf 45acp. These work great for all my 44 and 45 bulllets. Keeps lube off others and very stackable (inside a 30cal ammo can). 50 at a time is nice to keep track when sizing so I know what my production is.

As far as recycling goes, those deli containers are great for storing just about anything reloading/casting related. A quick wash, back to the loading room/man cave. No, they're not flat bottomed, so stacking boolits presents a problem unless you slip a chunk of heavy paperboard on the bottom.

Us single guys get a lot of deli stuff, who wants to cook?[smilie=2::grin:

Oh, I also got some of these from midway. They're the same boxes you get bulk midway bullets in;

40 oz. peanut butter jars, 36 oz. Metamucil jugs and 35 oz. Coffee Mate jugs. The Coffee Mate and Metamucil jugs are really heavy when full. Especially with 9mm. But all are plenty strong enough to hold the weight and not collapse.

Check out some hobby shops , I joined the wife on a visit to a hobby store like a Hobby Lobby or such and they had these metal cookie type tins that were aprox. 5"x 8" and 1 1/2" deep for $1.07 each. Wasn't a bad deal because she was buying fake flowers and if you spent over 20 bucks you could take 20 percent off that price.

Agreed... I just go to the local restaurant supply and buy a pack of the 16 oz versions. Depending upon the caliber, they'll hold a few hundred bullets. I don't worry about stacking the bullets, I just toss them in it. I usually dust them with a bit of talcum powder to keep them from being sticky.

About $0.16 each when you buy a pack of 50 containers and 50 lids.

I figure that if you are stacking your bullets that neatly, you don't have enough of a stock of bullets on hand. None of the ones that I've bought from commercial casters come neatly stacked, they're just all dumped in a box.

I cast 45's, so I dig 45 acp trays out of the bins at the range. The whizzbang semi-auto shooters go through them like crazy. I must have dozens. All free, and no effort taken to get them since I was at the range already.

They can make decent loading trays too depending on what you shoot. I find 10mm trays better for loading blocks. Those are a bit rarer. I prize em. :)

I use those sturdy plastic containers with a real wide mouth that Costco sells mixed nuts, etc. in.
With the lid on they are stackable, but a little on the heavy side when full. A nice feature is that you can see at a glance what's in the containeras they are transparent instead of translucent.
