I am new to cast boolets and while there is a lot of great info here I feel that most of it is starting above my knowledge base for cast. I am a very experienced reloaded for rifles and bench guns but want to get into revolvers. I just bought a freedom amen 454 cassul and want to get started but where do I begin? What are the best books out there for this type of reloading so I can learn the basics then use this site once I have s base of knowledge. I am reading about lubes and have no idea how they work or are applied I read about boolets fitting tight in my cylinders and leading all of which is foreign to me even though I do consider my self quite an experienced reloaded by any other standars.
Sorry for the lengthy first post but appreciaate any help you an give me a a primer to this new world for me
Thanks and all the best,
Don

A very good start:
http://www.lasc.us/Fryxell_Book_Contents.htm

The stickies here on the forum and
http://www.lasc.us/castbulletnotes.htm

Then there is the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook

Follow this with a few other reloading manuals to go along with the various online load data often found at the powder manufactures website.

Just forget the stuff you know about loading jacketed bullets. This is hand loading, with a whole new set of rules.

Welcome aboard.

Welcome aboard shipmate. Please let me suggest Veral Smith's book. He has preformed some good experiments and has compelling anicdotal data. It is not a bad place to start. If you follow his suggestions you will find success. Mike Venterino has some VERY good articles also.

the 454 was designed with cast bullets in mind.
you bought the freedom arms model they generally have good tolerances and take cast bullets easily.
even thier factory ammo from freedom arms comes with cast bullets.
i would suggest a plain base cast bullet at 452 [diameter] at 45 colt level loads to start then [using unique or 2400] work up.
when you get to the point of the 454 loads [or start seeing accuracy issues] then add a gas check mold and go for it.
reading about it and doing it are a bit different.
