JES Rifle Rebore...3,4 or 5 groove?????

What are the advantages and disadvantages with the different groove amounts.

I'm having a 1978 Winchester 94 and a Marlin 1893, both in 30-30, rebored to 38-55.

What say you?

If you want to slug your barrels, even numbers of grooves are much easier to measure than odd numbers.

Well...I guess all the American Barrel makers are doing it wrong.
I haven't yet seen any of the shooters using odd # barrels in Silhouette yet.

I had my Marlin 336W rebored by Jesse with 3 groove rifling. It's a great shooter with cast bullets and jacketed. I'm very happy with my decision to go with 3 grooves.

Have no experience with JES re-boring but do own a PAC-NOR 3 groove match grade 7mm Barrel chambered in 7-30 Waters on my CPA single shot that is extremely accurate with cast bullets.

Another vote for Jes 3 groove. I have 5 and all are dependabe boolit shooters.
3 in 375/06 1 in 35 Whelen and 1 in 358 Win

I have 2,3,4,5,6,7 and 8 groove barrels. Of course they are not JES rebores nor are they in the same gun. In two instances I could make a fair comparison in the same platform between 2 and 4 groove or between 3 and 7 groove. For working up accurate loads--- the 4 groove was easier than the 2 groove and the 7 groove was easier than the 3 groove.

And, there are barrel makers who make 5 groove barrels specifically for sillywet shooters. One of the most if not the most accurate sporter if have is a 5 groove.

My 358 Win. is a Weatherby Vanguard that started life as a .308 Win..
Jess rebored it with 3 groove rifling.

The concept of 3 groove rifling didn't seem to hurt it too bad ? ? ?

This is an academic exercise.

The real answer is that quality is more important than odd/even or quantity.

The old two groove Springfields shot very good and by todays standards they could hardly be considered "high precision".

only a 3 legged stool is always stable

after that, they all can be unstable


BUT I have read elsewhere explaining why ODD number of grooves is naturally better.

and as someone said, it has something to do with the displacement, and weight distibution...

or could be the phylburg flange just meshes easier with the grapplegrummit during the firing process!

Only thing I have heard is when you cut rifling in odd # the cutter is supported on the opposite side by a land. This would only matter if you are cutting one groove at a time.

That has nothing to do with how it shoots. Or maybe it would.

I have 2 barrels that have been done by JES. The three groove is cheaper. It has been said that 3 grooves are less stress on cast boolits. I know mine are both shooters and I'd have no problem recommending Jesse's work.

Don't forget land height, especially if rounded corners are involved. Rounded corners are best for keeping lube purging to a minimum assuming the lube used has too much viscosity for the gun caliber/conditions. A good 5 land gun with shallower grooves will outshoot a 3 land gun with higher lands at a large distance: mismanagement with land configuration for the caliber/conditions shot in. ... felix

Have 3 rifles JES has bored and rifled for me. 2 38's and a .414. All three were well done and shoot as well or better than any other factory barrel I own. I think all mine are 3 grooves But I will check that later.
Sliding a tight patch down any of those three barrels is a joy.

Had to bring this thread back , am on my way in the morning to leave a remington to be done , and I was debating which number of groove .
Now after reading this and talking to jesse , I am going with the 3 groove in 338-06 reboring a model 742 from it's original 30-06 , after reading a few post's by Bullshop on 375-06 that will be the next one done from a 1903 .

A caliber .375 / 06 is on my "one day" list. That one just seems like it would be a hunt "most" anything cartrige. Plus I like caliber .38 rifles.

Well I drove down today , and dropped off the remington, and discussed the 375-06 with him, had the wife and children along so could not stay as long as I would of liked .

So TC makes a 5 groove barrel...does anything come 3 groove from the factory?

3 is also a good number of grooves. I talked to Jesse briefly on this very subject before sending Ol' Ugly in to be re-bored. For my uses and expectations three grooves was his recommendation, YMMV. I don't know of any currently produced barrels with three grooves, a JES re-bore is a whole different animal from a production barrel anyway.
