Has anyone used beer can material fo 30 cal gas checks? I know it is real thin but could you use it on plain base bullets?

I have a standard 30 cal Checkmaker aqs two of my 30 cal molds have check shanks. I do have one plain based 30 cal mold and I'm sure I could make a thin aluminum check with the standard dies. They won't be precisely shaped as the dimensions are different. I do have plain based checkmakers for 35 and 45 cal and they work great. I don't see why a 30PB Checkmaker wouldn't work any differently. Frank

Who makes a 30PB checkmaker? Pat Marlin?

I successfully use beer and pop cans for GC material, but double them to get around .008 thickness. My checkmaker is one of Charlie's early models and is well made but slower than his newer models. The arrangement works for all my 30 cal casts from Lyman, RCBS and Saeco molds. No problems. I don't mind using the thinner material, doubling or working slower; its better than getting ripped by Hornady and Lyman with what they charge for checks. LLS

I think Pat may be the only one making PB checkmakers. I've used popcan (can't even handle the hard stuff anymore, had to switch to caffeine free) checks on 357 Magnums for a while and the work well. It's the only PB checkmaker I have and that's the hottest 35 caliber I have. There's been some discussion of the riflings cutting through such thin material, but I've seen no proof of ill effects.

Was thinking of trying this with a RCBS 150CM mould. Would be great if it works.
