Wow, thats way down south Florida. I'd be interested in getting some but wouldn't be able to Honcho the buy.

That's pretty close to me here. Even still, logistics may be a bit of a challenge. I certainly couldn't fit that in my pickup truck.

I just checked Penske, and it'd cost me a couple hundred bucks for a truck for the day with enough capacity.

I need to keep a close eye on this one.

I will do some checking on this lead and see if it is doable on my end D Crockett

Anyone have an idea exactly what sort of lead this is? I'm assuming it was used as ballast of some sort. It'd be great if somebody could nail down some details as to where it comes so we'd have a better guess about composition.

Man I'd like a couple hundred lbs of that stuff. Pretty sure each one of those bricks would be around 30lbs a piece

I just did the math on the bricks. $.41lb/in^3 * L16" * W4" * H1" = 31.16 lb each. If I only lived closer I would snatch it up !

I saw that and had thought I could make it work from Missouri!! Of course, I would drive down with a trailer to pick it up, then resale.
I figured $1000 total for pick up fees, another $800 to win the auction. So, roughly 2K in costs, then keep 3-400lbs for my own use. that leaves 6K lbs to sell, at $0.75/lb thats $4.5K. So, the economics work out.

Now the trouble would be in getting the time to go get it and repackage it.

Hmmmm........

If I were closer, this would tempt me mightily to honcho, assuming it's unalloyed lead or some other composition that was bullet- or casting-friendly. The costs seem right-side-up for someone close at hand, and among this bunch the alloy would almost sell itself. As long as .gov doesn't want end-user certifications or some other EPA-inspired bullrot, this could work very well for an enterprising soul.

I benefited from a sailboat-ballast project a few years back. Marie's uncle used about 2300# of what tested at WW hardness that he had some maquiladoro in Tijuana cast into 1" x 4" and 2" x 4" ingots, and he laid them like bricks among the keel stringers and ribs. (There's probably a boat-specific name for those parts, but I'm just an angler, not Magellan). I got about 250# of ends, angles, and lead sawdust (THAT was heavy stuff, and it didn't take up much space in a 5-gallon bucket), and during the smelting party some of the sawdust and scraps contained iron filings, like the black stuff a magnet draws out of beach or playground sand. Tommy did complain about power saw blade life; small wonder. Ya want guaranteed assay? Don't have yer lead work done south of the border. So if possible, know or find out about composition--unless you have an industrial-size furnace, you're likely to need to cut some of those ingots up some.

Looks like the auction was deleted and reset. I don't remember what the dates were before, because it disappeared from my watch list.

But I was able to search "lead" and find what appears to be the same lot at Homestead AFB.

Just did the math. Each of the bars pictured in the above listed auction weighs just over 31 lbs.

Lead go for about .68 + 10% = .748 per lb You are better off staying @ home and work the local scrapyard. Most of these Auctions go to foundries that already have the Trucks and man power to make it work. You only have about $1660 in profit to rent a truck move it. Sound like alot of work to me

^^^^^^ I would be willing to take 1000 pounds or so off your hands if you seriously want to bid on it.

These are intersting oppotunties. I think we should try for a weekend get together of Cast Boolit folks to process one of these sales. Finding a local honcho and coordinating the finances to start then we can drag our stoves/ burners and pots to melt and cast ingots from the auction. The honcho would need a logistic plan to house and feed whom ever shows up for the project, too.

Just sayin'.

I'd send a question as to if it is lead for sure and the weight of each box. I think it just states 415 boxes.

Under the "Shipping details" tab, it says it weighs 2790 lbs (approx) and it's on one pallet.

If the lead in Fl was good stuff I could come on down for a day to at least help out and would of course be in for quite a lot of the material provided it was cheap enough.

Well, that works out to 6.7 lbs per box... call it 100 ounces per box, give or take.

Yeah, sounds about right.

'you guys are dreaming. these .gov lead sales have all sold for much higher we casters are willing to pay'

I suspect that's true - anyone know how much lead goes for at the gov't auctions?

The OKC weights look like new in the box truck wheel weights, running the company name and part number they are lead and plastic coated. I suspect a tire company will be interested in these.

I am going to watch the one in Florida, But I would not bid much more than about a dime/lb.

Okay, here are the three auctions currently scheduled to run:

Approximately 2,970 pounds of wheel weights in Oklahoma:

http://www.govliquidation.com/auction/view?auctionId=5787286&convertTo=USD

3,280 pounds of battery terminals in Alabama:

6,654 pounds lead bars at Homestead Florida:

http://www.govliquidation.com/auction/view?auctionId=5814074&convertTo=USD

Does anybody plan on bidding on these?

I would be in on the one in Fl but it would have to be real cheap to be worth the effort.

It might be that we could match a buyer up with a transporter.

There could be people who don't have either the time, truck, money, or location. I would bid on any of the stuff, but I would need somebody to go fetch it.

Actually, I could buy and fetch the Oklahoma stuff if no one else plans on it.

I'm in OKC. I wouldnt be able to bid on it right now, but my roommate does have a truck I could pick it up in.

I plan to bid on the Homestead, FL one. I don't want to bid against anyone else here. My truck is only a 1/2 ton, so if we could win it, I think my best bet would be to rent a Penske truck to haul it back to my house. Just the gas it'd take to make multiple trips makes the truck rental to haul it in one shot well worth the money.

As long as it didn't go too high, the price per pound shouldn't be too bad with a couple hundred bucks of overhead to haul it back to Ft. Lauderdale.

There's over a ton of WW there. Could you haul it all in one go?

The surplus lead is already up over $1,000. I was hoping that'd be the ending bid in a worse case scenario for it. And there's still 2 days left to go.

Now past $3200 with 6 hours left.

SOLD for $4315 + 10% buyers premium of $432 = $4747 + I think 7% tax of $332 = grand total of $5080..... WOW! (+ shipping or moving it expenses of some sort)
