Winchester94AE spitting live rounds

I shoot Cowboy Action with my Winchester 94 but it keeps spitting out live rounds. Any idea why this is happening?

Helpful bunch, huh? This used to be a relatively common fault with the 94's and revolver rounds. Mine in .45LC would rocket out the empty and a live round right after when really dirty and running a fast stage. A thorough cleaning always cured mine, so I assumed (yeah I know-) it was a timing problem with the shell lifter caused by crud buildup. I suggest you might as for better info over on the SASS forum. I suppose there are plenty of cowboy shooters here that will help him out, if they know of this problem. I've been around 94's for years and played around getting shots as fast as I could some when I was younger, but never heard of or encountered this problem. I never had or played with the ones in pistol cartridges either though.

I think it might be that your cartridge guides might be just a bit wide and letting the lifter flip the case out on the way up. If it's a .357 there is an awful lot of excess room in that action.

Sorry I should have been clearer.
It's a '94 in .45LC and the live round is coming out the ejection port with a fired cartridge when I cycle the action after firing a round. From what you say a good clean sounds like the solution.

If the clean doesn't fix it, put some safety glasses on and put the gun down on your hip and cycle briskly while you are looking down into the action. Don't pussyfoot about with it, you need to crank firmly to duplicate what is happening when you are going fast. I had this happen once or twice when I was a lot younger, I had a 44Mag 94. I didn't think much about it, but I wasn't competing.

The 94 isn't a very competitive rifle for cowboy action, but if that's what you got, that's what you shoot!

I have two 94s, but haven't had a pistol calibre one in a long time.

Yeah, it's not really fast enough for Cowboy Action but as you say, you shoot what you got but its a good looking rifle with coloured case hardened receive and some nice woodwork. It's not going anywhere!

What is the cartridge o.a.l. ? I have one in .357, and it will flip .38's out quite often. It doesn't do it with .357's nearly as much.

I always thought that since the basic design was for rifle length cartridges, it just works better with longer lengths.
