Just got done with a video series to teach some basics of reloading, spotlighting the .40S&W.

Let me know what you think.

That's a lot of watching to do before comments. You may want to give everyone a little time.

There were some things that impressed me unfavorably, starting off with the advertisement that pays you for every hit you get on the video. Followed by the crayon art on the walls, and I could go on and on.

Do you want honest critique? Quit waving that camera around! I get nauseous with the herky jerky appearance of the too fast panning of the camera. Not enough light on any of the subjects. In essence, the poor video quality kept me from getting more that 5 minutes into the first vid. A candle in a room where there's powder? AND A GRINDER?

Second and third vid. are with a tripod mounted camera, but still not enough light. The lead smelting vid., I see no use of a casting thermometer. It's not enough to skiM the zinc off the surface of the melt. You should have a means of measuring temp. The pure lead from those stick on WW has to be close to the melting point of zinc to become liquid. Zinc melts a 786 degrees, so above that you will be melting zinc into your alloy.

Fer crying out loud, get some ingot molds! Real ones from Lyman, lee or saeco, quit messing around with that little spoon. A lot here find muffin tins or even corn cob-like molds for making corn bread. No need to transfer that lead to the little pot, pour into ingot molds right from the pan. Stick a flame into that smoke created by the lube/flux, it'll burn with a lot less smoke. Otherwise, that's a nice lay-out with a stove indoors with a good out flow of air with that squirrel cage blower. Is that propane, or natural gas?

This was my first attempt at filming anything.

The fuel is natural gas. I use a propane torch to speed things up.

The candle is for power outages. I live in a single wide trailer, space is limited, so tools, including grinding is done in one area, with the exception of molten lead and lube, because there is no gas feed and no ventilation in the armory.

I haven't made anything on the ads. There are ads on this site as well.

If there is anything constructive to add, by all means. What do you mean by crayon art?

In the first video...Right after the fire extinguisher 6 seconds in is the "f" bomb art..and then the naked woman "target" behind the ammo cans at about 16 seconds.
These are really not acceptable for a family forum...

It certainly doesn't offend my delicate sensibilities anymore than the puerile and overt vulgarity of the logo here. Neither are to my taste these days but do not really offend me as much as I suppose they should.

Then again, I am rather coarse by habituation but am trying to do better. My wife on the other hand came by and asked just what type of site this was after glimpsing the bullet riding, scantily dressed, cartoonish figure and the "Cast Boolits" print to the left. I told her mind her own business and get out. : )

Not really, I explained.

I watched 3-4- and 5. All in all, a good set of videos.

A couple of things. You made no mention of safety items. Such as some good gloves, and eye protection. I think I caught a glance of your face, I saw no glasses! Or a face shield. A long sleeve shirt would be wise as well.

Are your fingers made of asbestos? Picking up hot items is a bad idea. Secondly, you don't flux enough. The pet litter, (probably cedar shavings), is a good flux. BUT instead of fluxing, you are skimming the tin and antimony off the melted alloy, calling it CRUD. It's important to keep the valuable tin and antimony in the alloy.

You should be fluxing with something BEFORE you skim the steel clips off the pre-melt pan. I saw a lot of lead getting scooped off with the clips. I use scrap candles, just dump some of the wax in the pot, let it self ignite, or light the smoke with a match. Your clips will be cleaner, and you won't be wasting tin and antimony. Then flux again when you're doing the final cleaning before making ingots.

Now when making boolits, flux before you start pouring. I don't return sprue to the pot until adding more ingots. Disturbing the surface of the alloy separates the tin and antimony from the alloy, and induces air to the top of the melt. That air oxidizes tin, lead, and antimony causing the stuff you call crud. The crud is valuable tin and antimony. Loss of that makes the alloy softer.

Oh, I too live in a single wide MOBILE HOME. And I'm happily divorced. And a trailer is something towed behind a truck for hauling trash. Maybe that's why we're called trailer trash?!:kidding:

Lol, thanks.

I really appreciate the feedback.

And thank you very much for the tips on fluxing, I guess I have some more to learn on that subject. I thought I was doing ok, because after cleaning out the 10 pound pot after the last 50+ pounds, it was still clean on the bottom.

I too enjoyed te videos. As a noob it's kind of nice to be able to watch how things are done. I have enough common sense to know if I'm smelting 600' metal that I need safety gear, I don't need a video to tell me. Not awful for your first videos.

Going to be brutally honest here as I've got over 20 years experience as a creative director at national and international ad agencies. We wrote, shot and produced a lot of internal videos for clients, fund-raisers, in-house communications, etc etc., so I'm a tough sell.

Overall impressions are as follows:

• Amateurish

• Spontaneous

• Lacking in authority/credibility

• Typical YouTube, which is to say, a waste of time.

What's the comment I read on YouTube so often? "Well, there's five minutes I won't ever get back." That is now the mindset of today's internet generation and those who go to the internet for information.

You could lessen the last criticism by addressing the first two, so I'll explain.

STORYBOARD your shoot rather than grabbing a camera, flipping it on and being off to the races. PLAN your shots.

ALL INSTRUCTIONAL/HOW-TO VIDEOS START WITH A SCRIPT. Write a script, then draw/sketch your storyboard to the script. You'll be amazed at how much you reduce the video--which is a good thing. Your videos are too long. Attention span begins wandering, especially with the monotone voice-over.

EDIT. EDIT. EDIT. Way too much "this contributes absolutely nothing other than to show off my reloading/casting room" footage. I could care less about that. I want to learn how to melt lead, make boolits and turn them into projectiles.

LAY DOWN YOUR VOICE OVER TRACK then edit your video footage to that. Use hard cuts or four/six frame dissolves in your editing rather than endless and incessant camera pans and swings and jumps. I hadn't felt this much motion sickness since my first parachute jump in the service at age 18.

TRIPODS ARE YOUR FRIEND. Self-explanatory.

FRIENDS ARE GOOD. For shots not conducive to a tripod or in which you need more "action," get a friend to work the camera while you do the smelting/casting/reloading/etc. Most folks have two hands and want to see instructors using both hands. One hand holding the camera and the other doing the task is awkward.

LIGHTING. 'Nuff said.

CAMERA ANGLES. Believe it or not, POV isn't always the best angle.

As far as the content goes, as someone who's been doing this (reloading/making ammo) for a long, long time, I lost count of the number of "cringe moments" I had where info or technique or combinations of both or explanations had me cringing. This is why WRITING A SCRIPT beforehand is always a winner. More people get in trouble, credential wise, when speaking extemporaneously because we feel as though we have to constantly talk or say something or do something during those little voids in the action.

Etc etc.

My two cents, and it's harsh but it's honest. The internet reaches gazillions of people. I've seen some EXCELLENT "how-to" videos on YouTube. Your biggest investment is time. But it always pays off.

Is the book within your signature, Above Reproach, something that you have authored, or are you just promoting it?

Yes He wrote the book. If you have been here a few years and then read the book you will know JD wrights with a vast amount of real experience

Pay attention to what J D shared with you. You could not find many folks to report on your project who have more experience than his family has.

And YES I am waiting to get a copy of his next book.

Hi, I have only watched segments of some of your videos so far, will watch in greater detail later but I wanted to share some of my personal experience before I turn in for the night.

I am an amateur youtuber. I make videos of my hobbies, documenting as I learn and progress. Income from youtube ads helps support my hobby, otherwise I probably wouldn't be making the videos as much. I can understand peoples frustrations, ads are everywhere, but on most youtube vids you can click 'skip ad' after the first 5 seconds. It's the big time youtube channels that have the unskippable videos.

I try to think of videos that people haven't already done tons of then I watch the ones that already exist and try to figure out if I can do better. If there are good ones already and I don't feel I can improve on it then I usually scratch that topic and move on unless it is something that is very important to me.

You should look at "viewer retention" in your analytics. It shows you at what part of your videos you are losing the viewers interest. This information changed the way I make my videos. I try to keep them short and to the point in hopes of not losing viewers.

A coworker and I have both been growing our youtube channels simultaneously and learning together, which has been a big help for both of us. I'm no expert but what I have learned so far is a quality well lit stable video is important, Also keep it interesting because anytime someone is watching your video there are a dozen suggested videos on the screen tempting them to click away.

Lastly, when I look up something on youtube I usually look at the length of the videos. if one is 15 minutes and one is 3 minutes I will usually click the 3 minute video first. As a result I keep this in mind when I am editing up my own videos.

Keep making videos and good luck! [smilie=p:

Thanks. I'm the opposite as far as my viewing choice. I would prefer a longer video, hoping to gain a more in depth lesson on the subject, instead of a gloss-over.

To each their own, like I said, I'm no expert on youtube... but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
