I have four of those currently and have had several others over the years. I like them ~ simple reliable guns and a bit of Canadiana. I have a couple that are original Cooey before Winchester bought them out.

Not sure I understand your question about the forearm. It just snaps on.

Install the barrel and lock closed, place the "shoe" on the forearm against the radius on the receiver, rotate up and you will find that the underbarrel lug fits into a slotted plate with a little clip in it in the forearm. The little clip engages the under barrel lug and sort of toggles over with a "snap".

Of course if you are missing the clip that would be a problem.

If that doesn't answer the question, let's try again.

Yes cheers longbow, i have done it now.

I like these coey guns, its the first i have seen and they really stand out, i had to buy it.

It was battered and rusty, but now the joy of my collection

Like I said, I have had several over the years. All have had a die cast trigger guard, plastic "shoe" on the forearm and are stocked with some plain wood like birch but a couple of years ago I bought one that has a colour case hardened receiver, trigger guard and "shoe" (whatever it is called). and a walnut stock! I guess it was a "presentation grade" Cooey! I got it for $75.00.

My daughter's favourite trap gun is one of my old Cooeys.

They are a favourite of mine, just because. I guess they make me think of my youth and first guns.

Enjoy!

Here are pics of the first 4 Cooey Model 84s I restored (from top: 12 standard, 16, 20, 410). Still looking for the 28ga. Had a conversation with a certain American barrelmaker to "cheat" and just have a 28ga barrel made for a 20ga frame in the meantime, but between CBP and BIS - not easy to get a barrel across the border - never mind having to get the action to and from him for fitting.

I've bought some Cooeys for the same reason...

after I learn what I am doing, I plan on a full set like yours.

how about some better closeups of your work?

Nice!

Looks like you might have a colour case hardened receiver too. Hard to tell though. Yes better pictures!

I haven't done any work on mine yet... except I cut one down for a slug gun.

longbow, I too have bought a couple extra 12ga SS's to cut down for RB shooting.

I want something for light, easy packing, hard hitting, deep penetrating, moose hunting in the bush.

Nanuk:

I have always found the old Cooeys appealing. They are a simple old gun but well put together, seemingly strong/durable and more pleasing to my eye than many new single shots.

On the downside, like any single shot, they are light and I can say without embarrassment or hesitation that recoil is downright brutal with a 0.735" RB over 38 grs. of Blue Dot!

I am not small but shooting a few of those about slapped me silly (some may say I was close already but we know better). I use a folded carpet pad against my shoulder now when I shoot those from a bench. Yup, I am a wus!

I sold one many years ago I wish I had kept. I had cut it down for slugs, then picked up a Pachmyr choke system (think Cutts Compensator) but with no muzzle brake. I made a stainless steel muzzle brake in the high school shop and turned the muzzle for the adapter in the shop (try that now!), silver soldered the adapter onto the muzzle and had an interchangeable choke system with muzzle brake on my old Cooey. That was in the early '70's.

Why did I sell it you ask? Well, because I wanted something different... but I wish I still had it. I may just do the same to one I have now.

I'll take some tomorrow I guess since there is interest...

The 12 ga got a recoil pad, the 16 ga. I didn't think about it until after - so it's wearing a slip on (my 16ga trap load is 1 1/8 oz at 1200+ fps)... the 20 I steamed out the forend press checkering because it looked just awful... and the figuring in the .410 is just beautiful - was pleasantly surprised with the wood on all 4.

I've also got a 12 ga trap model with a 30 or 32" barrel, I forget which... fairly rare one, that.

The beautiful wood on the .410 (though the flash did wash out the "depth":

Great old coeys guys, i would like a collection of these fine shotties too.

Mind is case hardened and the trigger guard has gun blued with blue wonder.

I wonder if i did the right thing by gun blacking the action, i like it.

Very nice Bren R.!

Mine isn't in as good a shape as yours.

A friend has a 20 ga. that is engraved and colour case hardened as well. It is for sale but I didn't want a 20 ga. I am set up for 12 ga. so decided I would pass. I don't have the money to "collect" even Cooeys. If it isn't going to be used I don't need it (I may want it though).

Should clean mine up and post some photos too. Maybe when I get time.

They actually have some of the nicest "cheap" furniture I've seen on firearms - the factory "gloopstick" finish doesn't do them any justice. I refinish with two coats of Old Master stain (colour-mixed to give them all a similar tone), 2 or 3 coats of Watco Danish oil finish, then 2 or 3 coats of pro brush-on oil based poly - after curing, a brisk French polish-type waxing. Factory wood-to-metal fit isn't superb, but it's not too bad either.
