The CZ and the Remington 799s are hard to find a lot of the times. I ended up getting a 308 barrel blank threaded for a small ring Mauser Action and built my own 7.62x39 Carbine on a Turk Mauser action and stock. I used the original iron sights on the barrel and cut the military stock down to fit the shorter barrel length as well so now I have a nice little carbine to shoot. I did not need to replace the extractor with my setup but I did buy the Numrich magazine block and shortened cartridge plate to have a smoother feed.

the Ruger 77 "Davidsons" is a good shooter as well when you can find one.I see Savage offers in in their Scout model in thier 2012 catalog.

CZ527 or the Savage. The handi rifle is near to impossible to find, however, that said, there was one for sale over on Greybeards for $375 two days ago. The Ruger comes up now and then, for sale, but not too often.

There's a new CZ527 on Gunbroker now--$585 bid.

Mini Mark X Mausers were an earlier choice - you can modifiy a mauser to work but you'll be putting in enough time if not money to a smith to make buying ready made a better choice unless you have your heart set on something different.

I have both the CZ527 and the Ruger Hawkeye 77 and like both of them but, I do like the Ruger a little better.

If I'm not mistaken, you can order CZ's through Walmart's Sporting Goods counter. That's how I got my wife's CZ .22 rifle with a youth stock to fit her.

I got one of the Stainless Ruger M77s about 10 years ago when they have a special order for one of the distributors. It is an absolute delight to shoot. I got a decent hog with it a few years ago. I don't think Ruger makes them as a catalog item, although you might stumble on one at auction or in a used rifle rack. If you can't find one then I think the folks recommending the CZ are on the right track. CZ make really good rifles.

Another vote for CZ 527 in 7.62x39mm

When I took mine to the range, everyone had to shoot it, it was just too much fun amidst all the booming and bellowing .300 win mags....

I looked for one locally for more than 2 years and finally found one within 200 miles on one of my work trips around Texas after searching the internet forever.....

If I ever see another one locally for a decent price, I am liable to snatch it up if the funds allow so I can sell it to a buddy who loves mine dearly

I have seen the Rugers also, and I love Ruger, but their triggers are not on par and the CZ adjustable set trigger quality is so very nice.

Everything is billet forged and hand fit, not made completely on machines like the Rugers

Once You go CZ, You want them all!!!! Including BRNO guns.... so nice

I have one of the Davidsons SS/Black Plastic. Trigger, epoxy bed, polished bore, handloads, 308 bore. 11/2" usually off bench @ 100, 125 SP's and likes full throttle. CZ might shoot out of the box. Really like mine now, been a while since it saw light. But I remember it was a few trips to bench before I was happy. Gtek

I had a stainless ruger that my buddy talked me out of. It was a moa shooter and a dammed good gun.

Ruger made a run of these 20 or so years ago. Occasionally one comes up on the resale market. I bought mine (stainless steel/synthetic stock) new and will never part with it; it is a tack driver.

Couple years ago there was a Lee Enfield conversion to 7.62x39.(Gibbs IIRC) Just another option to keep your eyes open for.

avoid the zastava guns (mini-mausers, remmy 799's etc) I have one in 223, and while it works, they are rough, oversprung, impossible to get parts for as the importer changes every couple of years (currently kvar), and the bolt had tons of slop in it so the handle hits the rear scope bell a lot. Hard to scope, but it shoots ok, and it's cheap.

also, the CZ guns (and other european guns) are generally .311 dia as opposed to the american .308. It makes a difference when buying components.
