I've got the crushed walnut lizard litter in my home-made rotary tumbler.

It cleans the brass up nicely, but doesn't do a great polish on the case.

Could I mix up some porcelain chunks in there as well to polish the brass, or would it be just wasted effort?

Just add some Nu-finish car polish to the Media...a capful or 2 dribbled in while it is running and you will see the brass shine.
I would NOT add porcelain chunks.

Yep. Nu finish works really well.

You can find it at auto parts stores.

I've put about a cap and a half full of nufinish into the media and tumbled overnight and some of the brass still has a discolored look to it.

It's smooth and clean, but I thought I might be able to add something a bit more to make it look 'new' right out of the tumbler.

Some range pickup brass that sits for a while can discolor due to the ground it lays on.
These I polish up a bit with a scotchbrite pad or steel wool and re-tumble.
A vibrating tumbler and media can only do so much with nasty brass.

Really tough to remove discoloration may be caused by exposure to bore cleaner with ammonia in it. It is really hard to remove. I chuck it in the base of my Lee case trimmer and spin it with a drill using 0000 steel wool. Cleans it up nicely.

I like corncob and nufinish for bright shiney brass. Never tried walnut, but maybe the residual cornoil and slightly softer media makes a difference.

?? does a rotary tumbler really have enough action to work with a dry media like Walnut or corn cob ?? I would think not, what say you.

Good question.

The Thumbler Tumbler Model "B" will work with dry media. (corn or walnut). It does take longer. I would estimate a 2 to 1 ration between a rotary and a vibrating tumbler . I have owned a model "B' and an ultra-vibe 18.

In my experience walnut cleans great but doesn't shine. Corn cob (cheap from Grainger as lasting media) shines nice. Stainless pins and some dawn and lemi-shine do it all :). Would never go back

+1 on the wet tumbler with stainless pins ! no more corncob, walnut shell, hand cleaning primer pockets for me...

First I bought the Thumler Tumbler which cleans 2 pounds of brass per load. The finished product is great & shiney but cleaning only 2 pounds at a time seems almost like a full time job. Also, the Thumler Tumbler heavy duty B model is really not very heavy duty. Fortunately I only used the Thumler for 2 loads and called the company back. They agreed to let me ship the Thumler tumbler back and pay the difference for the 40 pound commercial tumbler.

The 40 pound commercial tumbler is outstanding. I added 13 pounds of stainless pins, 12 pounds of filthy brass, 2 gallons of cold water, 3 tablespoons of Dawn dish soap and 1/2 teaspoon of Lemishine. After 4 hours, pour out the filthy dirty water and voila, brass looks better than new !
