I have a question about removal of gas checks from a loaded cartridge. I received a few 44 Remington Mag bullets of questionable composition. I decided to pull the lead bullets with a kinetic bullet puller and then reload again for safety. Much to my surprise the bullets where gas checked. The lead bullet came out leaving the gas check behind. My question is there any safe way to pull the gas check other than shooting it out? Thank you all for your help.

I have had that happen a few times as well. What I did was take a small screw driver and press on one side of the gas check till it turned on its side enough to get a small dia. piece of stiff wire with a hook on the end under it and pop it out.
This has worked for me several times both with the 44 and 30-30.............Terry

Dentil picks work very well.

I have found that the hook shaped pic works the best for me.

I grab them in the corner and pull them right out.

The kinetic puller will remove the check if you remove the crimp from the case first.

How do you remove the crimp from the case first?

Yet another vote for needle nose pliers. Not much to it. Tip the check sideways then pull the check out of the case with the pliers.

I have used needle nose and in bigger cases it would probably be just as easy but I have so far only dealt with 30cal checks and I found the neck to be a little small for the pliers method.

The bullet is already gone, pretty much any object with a taper that you can tap into the case mouth will do it.

Agreed, a 22 cal would be even worse, huh. A short fat 44 pistol case should be a no brainer (the OP). I've taken checks out of 30 cal bottlenecks where the check has fallen into the case body. Turn the case upside down, empty the powder of course, and use skinny needle nose pliers. And of course at some point the size of the neck will determine the extraction method.

As to the other posts... I guess I don't understand the issue with a crimped case preventing check extraction?? I suppose If you were trying to fish the check out with a hooked piece of wire it would be a fumbling around contest. But If you grab ahold of the check with needle nose pliers I've never seen a case crimp that would prevent pulling a check out with pliers and a firm grip. :)

With a kinetic puller, the check will move in the case until it hits the crimp, then it will stop. Not enough weight for it to force itself past the constriction. If you are fishing it out with a dental pick or pliers, I doubt crimp will matter.

+1 on the needle nose pliers. IHooks sometimes slip, pliers wont.
