Lee 50-70 450Gr Boolit in 20 Ga

Any thoughts about using a Lee mold 50-70 450 gr boolit in a 20 ga with a Win AA20 wad? They are close and maybe with a paper patch they'd work????? Kicking an idea around cause I have the mold and bullets.

That's a fascinating idea... I am a big 20 gauger and one of the constant frustrations I face is that the Lyman 20ga slugs are too long for anything but the full 3" hulls (which are not easy to come by here). I'm betting the Lee bullet you're referencing would be shorter, and thus maybe a good solution?

Actually a 54 cal. is coser to the correct size. A 54 cal. round ball fits nicely in a standard 20 guage shot wad.

Hello Chevroner, I do not want to be rude but please check the size of a .540" RB in a regular wad with a vernier caliber.

Hello Chevroner, I too have been wrong at times. Now let me tell you the .575" RB is a really good fit in Trap Commander wad provided you put 2 nitro cards below the RB to raise it with 2-.125-28 ga like this:

I like to fold crimp my loads but then its very important that the bullet or Round ball must stick out of the wad, this way the wad petals do not get mangled at launch and only the ball pushes against the crimp to open it!
The round ball can be very deadly if you aim for heavy bones and it will simply smash them like a bulldozer.
They are very accurate too, that is if your gun likes them like mine does.

What wad would you use to shoot the .575" round ball out of a 20 gauge 2 3/4" chamber? My Rem 1100-Lt will not shoot 3" shells.

Hello JunkBug, you can use the Trap Commander wad in 2 3/4 hulls just choose your powder wisely, one that is denser and does not take up too much hull space!

Please note, I made this chart for 12 gauge slug loads but you get the idea about which powder take up less hull space!
Fold crimp and be sure that the you put at least 2-.125-28 gauge nitro cards below to raise the RB so that 1/8 of an inch is sticking out enough to push open the crimp without mangling the petals at launch.
The nitro cards Must be pushed home all the way with a 3/8 socket like this

If you fail to push it all the way the RB could punch through at launch and when jumping through the forcing cones.

I had some 20 guage loaded shells so I cut the end off of one and pulled the wad out and I tried a 54 round ball actually it measured .535 and it is a little small. I think as you tried, the .575 RB would be a better choice.
I shoot a RB in my 12 guage I don't remember the actual diameter but it is a fairly tight fit in 3/4 oz shot wades and it shoots through my Rossi Stage Coach 20" cylinder bore and modified choke barrels quite nicely. I have never shot it on paper though as it only has a bead front sight. For home self protection though I would not want to be on the receiving end.

Hello Hatcreek, all my tests are done with a rifled barrel, I just got my second 20 gauge shotgun a TC Pro Hunter in stainless steel with fluted barrel a 28 inch rifled barrel, just as soon as I finish my treatment that I'm going through the party time will soon begin!

Life is short and we got to do what ever it takes to make us happy.
