New to this......

#1 Does anyone make a mold for a .45 acp bullet 230gr RN that uses a gas check?

#2 Is a gas check needed on a 230gr RN moving at 800 fps?

#3 Would a gas check help performance on 230gr RN?

Hi,
You don't need a gas check for a 230gr RN at 800FPS. It won't help performance.

You don't need a cas check for 45acp, at all.

The low pressure and lower velocity is all reasonable enough to never need, or not benefit from a gas check. Most handguns, at fun or target velocities won't benefit from gas checks at all.

I do use them in my 357 rifle when exceeding 1,600FPS, they improve accuracy and prevent leading for that type of use.

Some of us hate the smoke from unchecked boolits... Yes, I'm one of them... I haven't loaded any checked boolits in 45ACP yet, but I do have an NEI mold that casts them. I believe it's a 200 grain, and it's a SWC design. I much prefer shooting checked boolits in 38 and 357, even if the velocity is below 1,000 fps... More pleasant to shoot indoors, but they do add about 3 cents to the cost per boolit....

I have or can get some 45cal PISTOL GC's if anyone is interested. I don't stock them as they are not a high demand item.

IMO, you really don't need a GC for a 45acp, but to each his own.

I can't imagine a GC helping performance unless you are casting with pure lead, and even then it is questionable.

I don't see how a check is going to reduce the smoke from a cast bullet. Much of the smoke is from the lube.

I think a check on a bullet for a 45 ACP is a huge waste of money.

Yep, not to mention time & effort.

But as Blammer said . . . To each his own.

Yes you can have one made...several shops can add a gc to an existing mold...but...unless you are pushing the bullet really fast...it isn't necessary and can be a pita. I had one done for a 45 acp converted to 460 Rowland...but it pushes them upwards of 1450 fps.

I cast 230gr 45ACP using WW and find @ 1400 feet per second leading is an issue in my 45 Win Mag LAR Grizzly. I shot for years with the a 240gr 44Mag @ approx. 1400 feet per second, and over time found elbow grease was needed. Switching To gas checks gave me the additional accuracy needed and greatly reduced leading. It appears no one makes a 45 230gr GC SWC for the 45ACP, too bad. I'll look into Mountain Moulds.

Mike O, Lyman at one time made a 230 grain RN gas check mould for the 45 Win Mag, #452488. I had one of these for a time, but unloaded it some years back. I suspect it didn't sell in large numbers, so Lyman discontinued it. The 45 Win mag didn't set the world on fire, either. I own and operate a lot of "road less traveled" calibers myself, so I've had to special-order tools and accessories that are off the mainstream. Mountain Molds has done fine work for me.

I have a Pat Marlin GC Maker for plain base GC. I got it for warm .45 Colt loads in my BH, but mainly for the same loads in a rifle, but have tried a few in .45 ACP. I mean, they're made from drink can aluminum so really only cost me the time it took to make them, and I make them anyway. Accuracy wasn't changed, but it did get me to thinking that I need to try casting some HPs out of soft lead and see if there is any leading.

Having said that, I have spent years shooting either 200gr SWCs or RN plain base cast out of various .45 handguns and never had any issues with either leading or accuracy, so unless your goal is some kind of specialty load like the .45 Win Mag or the .460 Rowland mentioned in above posts, or using very soft lead like I'm wanting to play with, you more than likely don't need to worry about GCs on them.
