I was taking a walk today and found not one, but two wheel weights on a street corner. I know it's not a lot, but free is free.

I quickly put them both in my pocket and was planning on adding them into my lead stash later. Sadly after getting over my initial excitement on finding them, I noticed the larger one was awfully light, and perhaps just a bit too clean. It also made a somewhat strange ringing noise when clinked together.... uh oh, it has Zn stamped on it too.

Yep that sinking feeling set in. They were both definitely zinc weights, and good for nothing other than sinkers, or recycling down the road.

I guess the days of finding easy lead wheel weights (especially just laying on the ground) are definitely on the decline, and this was just another gentle little reminder of the fact.

Out of the last 4 wheel weights I have recovered off the ground, only 1 has been lead. The other 3 have been zinc.

Yep that's right I am an addict, and I also look for wheel weights laying by the side of the road.

Very rarely do I find lead ww's now a days. I liken the disappointment of finding out a ww isn't lead to the same feeling as finding out the hot babe walking the mall is a dude.........

I'm still finding a large percentage of lead when capturing escapee wheelweights. Alas, the mega size truck weights all seem to be Zn now.

Where's this happening?? California? I get my WW's from Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. Near as I know there is no plans to convert to zinc/steel. Still all lead.

Two weeks ago I got a 3/4 full 5 gal. pail of weights from a car dealer friend of mine. The pail represented 10 months of balanceing work. The lead to Zn and Fe was about 75% lead to the other stuff. One of these days I`m gonna sell my accumulation of these weights and steel clips to the scrap yard, got about 100 lb. now.Robert

I took some zinc WWs to the scrapyard a few weeks ago along with 1500 lbs
of steel, the guy listed them as "lead wheelweights" on the ticket.
Had to show him they were zinc. Didn't get much for them but was better than
throwing them away, and I was going there anyway.

I used to live by a tire shop, thy would not give or sell me any WW's, said that thy reused them. I walked by the place every day and would find them in the gutter. It would seam that the reused ones didn't stay on to good. I bet I picked up fifty lb.'s in the three years I lived there:bigsmyl2:
how hard is it to cast zinc? could get a round ball mold and make slingshot ammo.

I would have thought it would be illegal to reuse them [wheel weights]

It is down here anyway, once removed the clips are no longer guaranteed to stay on. safety issue.

I have a couple of small tire shops that I know reuse them it's not uncommon here either. Legal?

According to my neighbor, a supervisor at our Sears Auto Center, it's illegal to reuse WWs in IL...'specially lead WWs since they've been banned from installation since the end of 2010.

Thankfully they're not banned down here yet, but I'm sure it'll be coming soon, dumb ...... greenies.

Picked 4 x 5 Gal plastic buckets from a local dealer last week & there was only 1/4 bucket of Zinc & steel w/weights among'st it.

From a few feet away it looked like about a
3oz WW, maybe 4.

I've had the same experience many times and places. They do NOT reuse the stick-ons though and will sometimes save them for me.
