I am going be casting some boolits for a friend. What seems to be the most common sizer for the 44 mag? I know, slug the gun. Just want to see what everyone uses.

If it's a Ruger, go around .432"

I use .430 in every .44 I have ever owned for 50 years.

I am not saying .429 or .432 might not be better. Just that it works for me.

For the first three decades I loaded for the 44 mag I never used anything else than the .430. It always worked fine in any of my Rugers.

I used .429 for years with excellent accuracy in every .44 Magnum I used them in. Then I read all about the bull.434et must fit the cylinder throats. Had moulds that didn't cast bg enough....got moulds that did.....then had to size .429, .430, .432 and .434.....never had the right "sized" bullets either to load or loaded for the revolver I wanted to use.......

Now I size my 429640HPs at .429 to fit my Colt Anaconoda and .430 for every other revolver. All are as accurate as with any other size, even in my one revolver with .434 throats. My Ruger 50th Anniversary has .4315 - .432 throats.

This thing he is going to load for is a older Colt clone in 44 mag. I talked to him tonite and he said he has been using store bought .429's. When I seen this gun this summer, it was leaded up bad. So, I hope .430 will work better. I think the main reason for his leading was too hard of a boolit. He never runs anything fast. So I think it is a hard boolit running slow and not sealing up.

My Dan Wesson .44 mag needs a .430" and my contender 14" 445 supermag needs .433" bore slugs @.432"

All my old Rugers and S&Ws needed .433". My new 44 spl. Blackhawk needs .430"

My S&W 629 works best at .430. My old medel 29 works best with .429, but shoot .430 acceptably.
It just depends on the gun, but I would start with .430

My NM Super Blackhawk likes .431; .432 comes a close second.

.431 for my Super Black Hawk and Contender. .430 works fine in the Blackhawk, but not in the Contender. Easiest for for me to size .431 for both.

Boolit hardness does not lead a gun. Going softer to a point does not lead a gun either. This is an issue hard to come to terms with and we really need a lot more info.
Powder, point of pressure rise, boolit slump, boolit destruction before exit, boolit skid, fit to bore. Many, many things that are mechanical.
Then you have all the gun measurement variations. Don't forget alloy variations and lubes.
It is a wonder we can shoot lead at all! :holysheep
Another thing many don't think of is "SLOW" with fast powders. Those powders peak fast, impacting a boolit very hard right away, then losing push. Grease grooves can iron away before the boolit leaves the cylinder.
Wrong alloys and powders can lead the front of the cylinder and frame parts from squirting out the gap. Silly putty boolits!
It seems as if the more posts I read about leading is done with light loads. Why does anyone think shooting slow is easy on a boolit?
I have shot the .44 since 1956 and the only leading I ever had was from soft boolits someone sent me to test, a dry lube on them.
I shoot all of my revolvers to near max to max with slow powder and use PB boolits even in the very large calibers, even took a PB to 55,000 psi in the .454 with accuracy and zero leading. My 45-70 BFR shoots a PB at 1632 fps with no leading. I have taken it to 1800 fps.
WHY, I am one lucky SOB I guess! [smilie=l: But I am not one to shoot light loads either. I bought the .44, .475, 45-70 and .500 JRH for accuracy and hunting. It is nothing to never clean a bore for years.
My JRH has never had the bore cleaned since I bought it, just the cylinder pin and hole for new STP.
I can't answer leading problems! I am not smart enough to diagnose your problems.
If the boolit is groove size or a little over it will seal. The gun might need .430", maybe more. Slug it. It is rare to have a .429" groove, old S&W's maybe. I don't even know why they sell such small boolits. The problem might just be FIT and not a hard boolit that when fit you might find it is better then soft.

.431

used 430 for years......had some leading and accuracy issues in some guns
433.....un-sized fixed the accuracy n those guns..but would not chamber in others

then changed to 431.....works fine in all 12 of my 44s
i wish i never wasted time with the .430.......
