I have a 1967 made 366CS in .35 Rem (love this gun!) and I'd like to install a scope for general range use but also possibly for a S.Carolina hog hunting trip. 4X fixed? 3-9? What do you guys use and suggest? Also, has anybody put a red dot or holographic sight on their Marlin? Like it?
Looking forward to your comments.
Thanks

I don't like variables on brush type hunting rifles.
(I do like them on long range varmint rifles )

If you are hunting deer at 150 yards or less, go with the 4x fixed ( If you can find one )

This is my suggestion. I prefer the balance of the rifle in .35 Rem with open sights but if I have to have a scope, I want the lightest, lowest power available.

Weaver K4 if you can find one. Just seems "right" if you're going to scope a levergun.

I have a Swift 1-4.5X20 on mine. It's a great scope for less than $100.00: very clear and lots of eye relief. I was shooting 1.3" groups at 100 yards with it las Saturday. The only one I would take over it would be the Leupold 1-4X20.

I have a Leupold VX-II 1-4X on my 1987 vintage 336CS .35 Remington; but that is just because I had the scope when I needed one for the new rifle.

I like the small straight tubed Leupolds for leveractions, or for most big game hunting regrdless of the rifle for that matter. The scope that I think would be the best hunting scope on a .35 Remington is the compact Leupold 2.5X. I do not know if they make them anymore, but I haad one on a Ruger No 1 in .45-70, and could not kill the scope.

Iron sight option gone a few years ago, by the time I adjust in with transitions-game gone-game over. Leupold VX1 2-7x33. Small, light, roll back for stalking or roll up for stand. Gtek

Most useful [total sighting] package - that is, the one I use on my matched pair of custom 1895s . . .

1. Burris Eurodiamond 1-4x24 mm (straight 30 mm basis tube yields large field of view and higher than standard brightness).

2. Warne Maxima STEEL LOW Quick-detachable rings' set.

3. Warne STEEL Marlin 336/1895 mounts' set.

*** When the weather is incompatible with scope use, remove it to use . . .

4. Marble's W&E adjustable folding tang sight.

5. Brockman's adjustable wing-protected front sight.
***
If you are left-handed, be careful when using the tang sight. I find its pivot pin bashes me in the nose. One rifle has tang sight installed, and tough luck buddy with my nose. The other has a Brockman's W&W adjustable rear sight replacing tang sight and scope assembly. The complete scope assembly is in storage.

Be aware that the scope, while incredibly over-designed for its purpose, is expensive (and worth it over a lifetime's use). While the M-16 "tactical" version with a worse-than-useless reticle is currently available in USA, I'm not certain the Eurodiamond near-twin is.

Hope this helps.

Norman Ford Texans and Lyman Alaskans look pretty good on them too. Not much power, but plenty of field of view, and they're from the proper era for a lot of the older 336s. I had a Texan with a little dot reticle on mine at one time, the dot covered about 3/4" at 30 paces or so.

On my old 444's , 44 MAG and 45-70 I have a bunch of different old period scopes !

Weaver K2.5 , Weaver K3 , Weaver K4 , Weaver V8 , Weaver KV , Weaver V7 , Redfield 1-4 , Redfield 1.5-5 Widefield , Bushnell 1.5-6 , Marlin 4x , Marlin 5x and a Marlin 1.5-5 .

I used to use a Leupold Vari XII 1-4x on the Marlin 444P I had .

Now if I were going to set up a single gun for say piggie hunting I'd look long and hard at the Leupold Pig Hunter scope , it's a 1-4x with a heavier duplex type reticle and can be had for under $230 .

My $.02 worth if are hunting where the vegetation is a bit thick, a scope is useless. I tried a straight 4X; for a good 15 minutes one fine morning I attempted to fine the nice 4 point muley in the scope, I did not have any problem seeing him without the scope. Fact is I could see the white of his eyes till I tried to use the scoop, so much for a 4X. I than tried a 1.5X; I was better with the iron sights. Eventually I mounted a receiver peep sight and it has been good to go. Mine is the 1970 centennial 366 in 30-30, I keep under 150 yards on deer and under 100 yards for moose and B bear with consistent 1 shot results.

I've used variables on lever guns and bolt actions with a max magnification or 12 or 14x several times with excellent results and I had them cranked all the way up .

However I'm hunting from treestands typically 25-35 feet off the ground and usually I see the animal moving so it's usually easy to find them . In this type hunting big magnification will put you right in his bedroom thru brush or atleast thats the case for me !

YEP!, of all the scoped levers I have, accept one, wear vintage steel Weaver scopes, the other is a Bushnell 4x20.

My brother and my self share a rifle just like yours. Love it as well. We have been very happy with the weaver k6 fixed 6 power with quick release rings. All the magnification you need on a brush gun and quick to go back to open sights. Good hunting.

One option for brush is a cheap Tasco Red Dot. Got a nice buck at about 15 yards with the combo. Practical pistol shooters like them for their rapid fire stuff on plates. I do not care for reliance on a battery even though I have taken 3 deer with one mounted on an old military rifle and my 35. Now use a "shotgun" scope, a variable 1.5-4. Sould dispense with the variable and go a 1 power. Older eyes focus better through glass.

Bushnell banner 3x9, but only because I can't see F/R sights at the same time. Usually have it set ~5 (range boresight) so I can see target holes. Set it at 3 and use like a red dot for field work.

+1000 to that. Both of mine have K4 Weavers. Nothing else is appropriate.

Cheap, too. A good one can be had for $100 on evilBay or Gunbroker. I still find them at gunshows, too. Far better made than anything you can find for that price today.

I have all the Marlin guide guns starting with the 30-30 and up to the 450 Marlin. I have found the Nikon 2x7 works very well on the smaller calibers and Eotech red dots on the larger calibers works very well. All mount on the aftermarket weaver style rail sold everywhere and all rifles are shooting well with jacketed bullets. Starting to cast again and will be working on cast boolit loads for all of them. Wondering about the 444 with 265 or larger gas check bullets?????? Anyone have any experience with that one??? bobp2506

Thanks for all the suggestions. I happened across a nice 4X Leupold at a gunshow that I couldn't pass it up and it sure has helped my tighten up my groups (old eyes). I've got a 358315 coming from a member here and I can't wait to start experimenting between that, the RD 35-190 and, the RCBS 35-200. I'm planning on a Ga. hog hunt with my son this year and he'll be using this gun.

I have a couple of Nikon 2-7 x 32mm not on a lever but they make an excellent hunting scope
i have shot several deer with the guns that have them they are my go to scope for hunting deer

the one that gets the most use is mounted on a 12ga and is used for slugs i can shoot running deer at 25-50 yards and zoom in for deer as far out as the slug is capable

if i could hunt with a rifle for opening weekend more of them would be wearing this same scope

I have the Nikon 2-7 X32 on my 1895GG and I am very happy with the scope. I normally keep it set a 2X but there are times when I am sitting on the edge of an oat field where the 7X comes in handy. Any deer or hogs at 150yds or less are going to be in the freezer.

Too late now that you got a scope, but I fixed my son's 336 up with a forward mount and a scout scope. Accurate at great distance and blazingly fast at brush gun distances. Both eyes open sighting with that low power pistol scope / scout scope makes for a great and useful combo.

I like the Weaver V3. Good field of view at 1x for thick cover, up to 3x for longer ranges.

I'm using a Bushnell Banner 1.5 - 4.5 x 32mm on a Rossi Rio Grande 45-70 gov (very similar to the Marlin 336 line). Works well for me and has good dusk to dawn ability too. Actually Ranch Dog suggested it to me when I was looking.

Many years ago, Tasco came up with an interesting scope that was actually well made and perfect for lever guns. It is the 1.5-5x32/44 EXP with the oval lenses. They originally sold for around $200+, but they were a flop in the market place. Who was going to pay $200 for a Tasco in 1995 when you could get a low-end Leupold for the same price. Anyway, I have several and I have never had to pay more than $50 for them on fleabay. Only drawback is that they are kind of heavy.
