View Full Version : New Shooting Bench

I had a " less than ideal " shooting bench
that was for a right hand shooter only.

I have a few friends that shoot with me now
that are left hand. UUUmmmm, a real
problem with my old bench. I ( and my left
hand friends ) got tired of this ! So, we
got outside my basement this morning ( very
nice weather for a project like this ) and built
a new shooting bench.

This one will work equally well for
right hand or left hand shooters.

I asked my friend Jimmy to sit and
use the table so I could get a few photos
with my camera phone.

The table is put together with 3" deck screws.
Not a single nail in this bench.
Tell me what you think ?

Thanks,

Ben

Only thing it may need is some sort of leveling system.

Where the bench will be sitting is very level.
The bench has three legs on it like a tripod.
The bench can't " wobble ".

Should work out just fine.

Nice workmanship, Ben! That's quite a sturdy bench. (I like the deck screw idea too.) The only thing I'd suggest is giving it a couple of coats of a good oil stain to protect it from the elements since it hardly appears to be portable (LOL).

Yes, Paul,.....We have a metal shed with locking doors at the range where it will be kept . You have a good idea. A couple of good coats of protective finish would certainly be in order.

Ben, I think you and I think alike. My wife is always accusing me of overbuilding everything I do. I just tell her I want to make sure it lasts and holds together.

You are right, this one would most likely be
viewed by many as " over - kill ."

However, I bet it will be the last shooting bench
that I'll ever have to build.

Over built is always better than under built.

Nice bench Ben.

I do most of my shooting standing on my feet. Just not much of a group shooter I suppose.

When it comes to defending yourself or shooting a wild animal, your technique will definitely pay better dividends.

In a self defense situation, unless they try to rob me at the firing range, I'll most likely not have access to my new shooting bench.

My " left hand friend " Bryan wanted to try out the new shooting bench today for his 1st time and shoot his 1917 Enfield Sporter, 30-06 to make that last minute " double check " before deer season opens soon.

I think he is ready, what do you say.

After Bryan shot today , he said...." Why did we wait so long to have a nice bench like this one ? "

You make me wish I still lived in Alabama ... nice bench and the "stool" looks much better than the office chair!!

And Brian is a GREAT shot!!

The " stool " in the photo, is again home-made and offers 4 different adjustment heights to place the shooter's face in the proper position with his sights / scope.

It has taken some time, sweat, saw dust, and money but the accommodations at the range are definitely improving.

( There were never any plans to use the office chair at the range.....that was for photo purposes only a few days ago when we were building the bench)

And Brian is a GREAT shot!!..........Bryan will certainly take that as a nice compliment.

Thanks,
Ben

I see somebody in the troop was well-aquainted with splinters, nice job on sanding the top and de-nibbing the corners.

Gear,

When considering the concept of picking splinters out of my hands, I believe in the old motto........." An ounce of prevention is well worth a pound of cure."

Yeppers, no reason to use a 2x4 when a 4x4 will work...
