I was working on a hunting mix of lead and came up with 75% soft lead / 25% COWW. I push these boolits at 1450 fps. They weigh 182gr lubed and checked. They are air coooled and do not lead. It is the LEE 170 RNFP mold sized .311 with Hornady GC's.

The boolit on the left went through 3 milk jugs filled with water and was found in the fourth.
The one on the right went through 1 milk jug filled with water and split the 2x4 behint it, meaning it expanded in the milk jug because it didnt enter the 2x4 and was found lying on the ground where the 2x4 was sitting. Both retained their GC's.
I had 2 2x4's sitting one behind the other and the back one was knocked 25 yrds down range. I thought the boolit was stuck in it(by the tumbling action it displayed) so I walked down and picked it up first. Not a mark on it. LOL

This is the one the second boolit struck. By the compression of the wood and size of impact, it was mushroomed before it hit the wood.
Thats what I was wondering, in what milk jug did the first boolit expand. So I set the wood blocks behind one to see.
The jugs were at 50 yrds. Recovered weight is 181gr each left expanded to .614x.683 rt expanded to .524x.595 (I think hitting the wood smooshed the mushroom back a little)

Looks to me like they will be a dynamite hunting boolit as long at the terminal velocity is above 1000 fps (without looking at a ballistics table that should be about 125 yards). Just hit em where it counts.

Another way to check expansion is to put a large piece of card board about 5 feet or so behind the jug of water. Shoot on boolit through the cardboard first for a reference then shoot one through the jug and the cardboard. Now measure the difference between the 2 holes and that will be the expansion.....Terry

I don't see how you can get that mushroomy looking thing loaded in a case much less shoot it... :)

should be fine, better know your drop after 75 yds.

I adjusted scope to 1.5"high at 50 yrds then lobbed a couple down to 100 yrds and they were "spot on" as our Brit and Aussi brothers like to say. Even with gusts of 27 mph at a 90* angle to my shots they didnt drift much at 100.

Sounds ok to me within reasonable (if there is such a thing) range.
