30-06 Great for field rifle
September 29, 2012
I have read many reviews about this rifle both good and bad. Let me first say I bought this rifle used, but it had only been fired a few times. Previous owner said it had to much kick. Prior to shooting, I broke down the gun and cleaned it thoroughly. Took it to range and first 5 shots missed paper at 100 yards. I moved target back to 30 yards and got 3 rounds in about a 1.5" group. This group was low and to the left about 5". After another 12 rounds to home in the scope, 3 rounds at 100 hit paper with a 4" group. Not bad for first time at range.
The bolt is a little stubborn but patience is the key. Mag misfed 3 rounds, but just remove mag and clear rifle. No big deal. The metal for the bolt is brittle, so be careful when cleaning. I knocked off a small piece when disassembling, but filed it. All worked out fine.
Is this a rifle I would recommend...Yes. Is it a competition rifle...No. If you want a gun that you can take in the woods and abuse, then this will be fine. Just be good to it, clean it and be patient.
As for the kick...like a mule with the 30-06.
Happy Hunting.

I'm sure with this recommendation that folks will be lining up to purchase one. Its no big deal. I mean really, just do a little filing here and a little there and it is fine.

Maybe "AverageJoe41" has a job writing reviews for gun rags - The writing sounds familiar: "The action was a little rough, but will surely get smoother after use." "The groups averaged 3-4 inch @100 yards which is absolutely fine for hunting." "The gun has a pleasing, no-nonsense rough finish." I'm sure you guys can come up with further examples..[smilie=l:

If he hadn't mentioned the bolt and mag, My first thought would have been a Handi Rifle!
You know, a project in a box :)

What the heck did Bubba do while disassembly ?

I have one of these 770's with the scope, won it as a door prize. The bolt handle already snapped off, replaced under warranty. I often can't eject a spent case without dropping the magazine because it snags. The bolt is loose and wobbly. It does shoot fine though, I needed a 308 and this one fell into my lap. Not going to complain... just glad I didn't spend money for it.

Classified ads are full of them. Wonder why. :veryconfu

Funny thing is I knew it was prob a 770 when I read the first post.
