I draged a door home the other day and took it all apart found two sheets of pure lead. There must be at least 100 lbs or more. The problem is; there is still some glue and particle board on the sheets of lead and when i cut them and smelt them, they smoke like hell. Is there a product or a better way to get this stuff off. Got any ideas???? Man this is some nice N pure bluish tint lead. This stuff is about a 16th" thick and rolls like paper. I can see some BP bullets down range soon.

I use Xray room lead sheilding
It is glued to the drywall
When I get it , it comes with glue and paper
I just smelt it on a day when the wind blows the smoke away from the house
I look at it as it comes with the needed flux

Just stir in the crud till it burns off

Randy,
John pretty much said it all. I recently picked up a coupla hunnerd lbs. of the same thing. I cut the sheets into managable pieces, rolled it up and then cut the rolls up with a portaband. I put 'em in the pot a few at a time and started the process with a air/acetylene plumber's torch. The smoke was crazy, but I kept the heat on it as I poked and stirred with an old grill spatula. When all the lead had melted, I scooped as much of the crud off the top as I could and then cleaned the rest out with my ladle. After that, I just scooped and ladled into my pigging mold.
STAY OUT OF THE SMOKE!! There's some kind of chemical in the adhesive that generates some really bad fumes. A good lung full and it'll lock up your breathing for a few seconds, enough to scare ya good.

I'll just cut it up and smelt it on a good day the breeze carries it away in a good direction. I'd hate to suck in a lung full of that stuff. I smelted so far about 15 lbs of it and dropped a chunk of it. Must be pure, all thugggg no ting.

Particle board from my experience is not waterproof (yours may be). Since it's FLAT you could layout a tarp, lay in the door, put a 2x4 frame around it, fill with water to just cover the door and fold the tarp over. Soak for a few days and you may be able to easily remove a large percentage of the non-lead.

I have gotten a couple of scap loads from a contact who is in the business of manufacturing the shielding panels. Great stuff- melts like sheets of wax. these scraps had some sawdust in it as well as a light coating of oil of some sort to keep the dusty white oxidation down. self fluxing to some degree...
stuff was so pretty i need to walk down memory lane again.....

I melted down about 700# of the stuff with drywall attached. I rolled it up and stood it on end in a dutch oven. When the dutch oven was about full I'd pull out the roll. I just considered it to have built in flux. Its definately an outdoors job.
